Runaways Will Show Staff of One In 'Full Power Mode'

Runaways Nico Minoru Staff of One

Star of Marvel's Runaways Lyrica Okano revealed that the Staff of One will be at "full power" in the first season, and that there will be different versions of the weapon. Runaways will be joining the ranks of the superhero TV world later this month, continuing to build up the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the small screen. There's something a little different about Runaways though, unlike the rest of the small screen MCU offerings, this is aimed at a younger audience, and stars much younger heroes. Centered on a group of superpowered teens who discover their parents are up to no good, Runaways brings to life this lesser-known comic team.

One of the key members of that team is, of course, Nico Minoru (Okano). A budding wiccan and a goth, Nico discovers that she has inherited her parents' ability to do magic. She gains control over a magical artifact known as the Staff of One, which has popped up in the trailers and is a major part of her character's powers in the comics. In a new interview, Okano revealed a little more about this incredible weapon.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Okano was careful not to give too much away, but did say that the Staff will be at "full power," and that there are multiple versions of the Staff used. In response to how much of the Staff of One is explored in season 1, Okano said, "In this season? Wow, I don’t know if I can say. You will see it in full power mode and it will be great." She went on to talk about filming with Nico's magical artifact:

How do I feel when I hold it? Powerful! Like I don’t, I want to be confident with it, but it’s so much. It’s like am I holding it right? They’re so careful with it, and they have different models to do different things. It’s not just one, there’s like four others, five others,  it’s amazing. They're just like ‘don’t break it!’ And I’m like oh my god, so much pressure. Yeah, but it’s a lot of fun.

This is not all that Okano has said about the Staff in recent interviews; she has also hinted at how Runaways will connect to Doctor Strange. We also know that there will be at least one difference between the Staff of the comics and the one on Runaways: this one will not require blood magic to be used - at least, not in the way Nico used it in the comics.

These new comments suggest that the Staff is going to be incredibly powerful, and fans of the comics will be wondering just how much of this power Nico will be able to tap into right away. In the books, the Staff's power is something that Nico has yet to fully use. The most powerful beings in the mystical Marvel universe show a lot of respect and even fear to the Staff though, so there is a lot of power waiting to be accessed there. Knowing that multiple prop versions were made is also fantastic; it's clear that the Staff is going to be a major part of Runaways, and we will see it doing all kinds of interesting things.
