Marvel's Runaways Cancelled On Hulu; Season 3 Will Be Its Last

Marvel's Runaways is cancelled at Hulu; the series is set to end with season 3 next month as a new trailer is released teasing the final season.

Marvel's Runaways Season 3

Marvel's Runaways is cancelled at Hulu; the series is set to end with season 3 next month as a new trailer is released. A few years ago, Marvel TV was rapidly expanding, with series set up at ABC, Netflix, Hulu and Freeform. However, in the last year a number of those shows have been cancelled or confirmed to be ending. All of the Marvel Netflix series, from Daredevil to The Punisher, were cancelled between the end of 2018 and early 2019. Marvel TV's last live-action series on ABC, Agents of SHIELD is set to end with season 7, which will air in 2020.

Now, despite it seeming like Marvel TV's output at Hulu would increase, it seems the company is culling its live-action streaming shows there as well. Early this year, Marvel TV and Hulu announced an interconnected universe of animated TV shows, including Howard the Duck and MODOK that will eventually crossover. Additionally, two live-action TV shows were put into development, Ghost Rider starring Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes and Helstrom. Currently, only the animated series and Helstrom remain in-development. After Ghost Rider was cancelled before it could truly begin production, now it's been announced Runaways will end with season 3.

Hulu released a new Runaways season 3 trailer that confirms it will be the show's final season. This marks the latest Marvel TV cancellation and the second of Hulu's live-action Marvel television projects. Check out the new Runaways season 3 trailer below.

Coming off the Runaways season 2 finale, there's plenty for Marvel's teen superheroes to deal with in their upcoming outing. Not only will Morgan le Fay (Elizabeth Hurley) arrive, but the Runaways are still dealing with the alien race of which Jonah was a part. Plus, the season 3 trailer further teases the upcoming Runaways and Cloak and Dagger crossover, with Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) and Tandy (Olivia Holt) joining the series for an episode. However, since Cloak and Dagger was cancelled last month and Runaways is ending, it will be the one and only crossover between the two series - unless they're resurrected.

Unfortunately, that seems to be a long shot as both Runaways and Cloak and Daggers' cancellations seem to be part of a larger move to clean house of live-action Marvel TV shows not directly under Marvel Studios' purview. When Marvel head Kevin Feige announced the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con and D23 this summer, it was confirmed the film studio would venture into television productions for Disney+. With Feige's role at Marvel expanding and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb reportedly on his way out, it seems the studio is cancelling current or upcoming live-action shows in an effort to ensure everything is under the same MCU umbrella. At the time of this writing, the only live-action TV show still in development is Helstrom - but it remains to be seen what becomes of it.

For now, Runaways fans can rest assured knowing they have at least one more season left to watch and it will hopefully provide closure for those who have been following the teens' stories up till now. Plus, with Morgan le Fay and the Cloak and Dagger crossover set to elevate Runaways season 3, at least the show may go out on a high note.
