This article contains SPOILERS for Mech Strike: Monster Hunters #3!

Many fans will list Peter Parker or Miles Morales as their favorite spider character, but Marvel has chosen a different one to surpass them both in one regard.

In an out-of-continuity story, the Avengers created giant mech suits that specialize in all of their various superpowers. There are giant robots driven by Captain America, Wolverine, the Hulk, and of course Iron Man, who built them. They have recently gone up against monster versions of their classic villains such as the Green Goblin, Loki, Dr. Doom, and Venom. Even the mech suits themselves became monsters when they were attached to the eye of the kraken that transformed them.

In Mech Strike: Monster Hunters #3 by Christos Gage and Paco Diaz, things become complicated when the kraken itself attacks New York City. The battle was fierce because mech versions of the Avengers fought both the monster villains and the kraken. As the battle raged on, civilians were in danger on the streets. Not having a mech suit themselves, Miles Morales and Peter Parker both tasked themselves with protecting the civilians on the ground from tiny monsters while leaving the major battle to the heroes in the suits. Strangely, Ghost Spider, also known as an alternate version of Gwen Stacy, had a mech suit and was engaged in the fight rather than helping the other spider people.

It's odd to leave Spider-Man and Miles Morales out of the battle while giving Gwen Stacy her own suit to take part in it. There could be many reasons for this, none of which are practical and serve any strategic purpose for the Avengers. Peter Parker and Miles Morales are already very popular among Marvel readers. They appear in multiple books and would be easy choices to include in the mechanized adventures. Gwen Stacy, however, is fairly less popular, so Marvel editorial would want to include her to diversify the team and perhaps include more women.

However, if this story were in continuity she probably wouldn't have been included. Unlike Peter Parker and Miles Morales, the main Marvel Universe isn't Gwen Stacy's native universe. She comes from a parallel universe, so every time she would have to join the fight with the other mechanized Avengers she would have to travel over in order to be included. That's not very practical for a superhero team. So, for the sake of these Avengers, it's probably very telling that they invited her into the group and gave her own mechanized suit while passing on giving Peter Parker and Miles Morales one of their own.
