Kevin Feige reveals the titles for the rest of the Marvel Studios films in Phase 4 will be announced after Avengers 4 comes out. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought a generous amount of Marvel superheroes to the big screen, starting with Iron Man in 2008, and recently welcoming Spider-Man back after a few attempts over at Sony. After two successful Phases in which the audience has come to know heroes such as Ant-Man, Thor, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the MCU as we know it will come to a conclusion with the still untitled fourth Avengers film, which also marks the end of Phase 3.
However, this ending is also a new beginning for the MCU as there are films planned for a Phase 4, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Given that the last two Avengers films on the list will have the mighty heroes teaming up with the rest of the MCU to go against Thanos, not everyone will make it out alive - and so the fate of most heroes, and therefore the rest of the films planned for Phase 4, will remain a secret until after Avengers 4.
In an interview with io9 while promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shared there won’t be any announcements about post-Avengers 4 films until after the last Avengers film is out.
“I hope [the news comes] after that. I think there will be certain elements that start to come about, not the least of which is the already announced release date of the next Spider-Man film. But other than that we’re going to keep it very close to the vest because this is really about focusing on the unprecedented conclusion to a 22-movie overarching narrative.”
Feige’s words shouldn’t come as a big surprise as Marvel has already been doing some adjustments in order to not spoil the titles that will come after Phase 3 comes to an end. For instance, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 became Avengers: Infinity War and Untitled Avengers 4 (for now), as according to Feige they are “two different movies” and the subtitle for the fourth film would spoil its predecessor.
However, one thing is for sure: Peter Parker will be the one leading the audience through this new phase in the MCU, which is why the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first on the list – very much like his mentor Tony Stark when the first Iron Man film came out, leading the way through the well-established cinematic universe we know.
It’s no secret that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will mark the end of not only the MCU as we have come to know it but also of many of the characters we’ve been following for almost 10 years, so it’s logical that the studio is keeping the rest of the titles for Phase 4 under wraps. But with Avengers 4 going into production in the fall, and with fans and curious eyes all over, the studio should be extra careful as to not have any information leaks that could spoil the future of the MCU in a minute.
