In August, the Avengers and X-Men mixed Unity Squad will return as the Uncanny Avengers step back into action to stop a spree of murderous attacks perpetrated by the X-Men's version of Captain America, Captain Krakoa.

Written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Javier Garrón, this new Uncanny Avengers series will kick off in the wake of Fall of X, the X-Men mega event that will act as the tragic third chapter of the Krakoa era. Leaders of both the U.S. and Krakoa governments are being assassinated by a mysterious new Captain Krakoa, and Steve Rogers believes these are false flag attacks meant to whip up anti-mutant hysteria. For this reason, Captain America assembles a squad made of his best mutant hero friends, to stop these killers from igniting a new world war.

The New Uncanny Avengers Will Have To Pick Up The Pieces From The Explosive Fall of X Event

The original Uncanny Avengers series was launched in 2012 in the wake of the Avengers vs X-Men event. It featured a line-up of classic Avengers and X-Men characters, working together to set an example of how to bridge the divide between mutants and humans. The original Unity Division team included Captain America, Thor, Havok, Rogue, Wolverine, and Scarlet Witch. Things have changed a lot in the Marvel Universe since then, however, as mutants are no longer trying to be accepted into human society but have instead built their own separated nation, Krakoa.

Originally announced in November 2022, the new Uncanny Avengers line-up is also different from all previous incarnations. The team features Captain America, Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke, and Penance. It is significant that, for the first time, this Unity Division features no non-mutants except for Captain America. This is a pretty noticeable change from the past, and it solidifies the idea that this series will be more tightly anchored to the events of the X-Men titles rather than those of the Avengers. It all ties to the aftermath of the Fall of X event, whose importance has been further stressed by Gerry Duggan in his message during Marvel Unlimited's X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event, where he said: "Everything we’ve been working towards in our third act is coming to a head this summer".

The Fall of X era will begin in this year’s Free Comic Book Day: Avengers/X-Men #1, which will include special lead-in stories for Uncanny Avengers from Gerry Duggan, Jonathan Hickman, Joshua Cassara, Javier Garrón, and Valerio Schiti, which will go on sale on May 6. To learn how Captain America and his new team will fare, instead, Marvel fans will have to wait for the first issue of the new Uncanny Avengers series, coming on August 16.
