Warning: this article contains spoilers for the The Immortal Hulk #42!

If there's one thing that sets the Hulk apart from other Marvel heroes, it's the amount of collateral damage he leaves in his wake. That damage has been the focus of Al Ewing and Joe Bennett's The Immortal Hulk, with Hulk's allies, enemies, and alternate personae all expressing in different ways the damage that can be caused by having a monster - even one who means well - stomp his way through your life.

It's for this reason that the group known as Gamma Flight were formed, taking the residual members of space team Alpha Flight and combining them with the Absorbing Man and Titania - two villains with experience hunting the Hulk - and Doc Sampson, his on/off psychiatrist, to try and put a stop to the Jade Giant's recent mission to tear down the human world... and build something better. Sadly, the team hasn't had much success; Sasquatch was killed by the new Abomination, Doc Sampson switched sides, and the team recently lost the Hulk despite having him in unbreakable restraints and trapped in space.

Thankfully, a little experimentation with the Green Door - the eldritch power that allows the Hulk to return from death - was able to give the team a little muscle in the form of Doc Sasquatch: a new Hulk who combines Doc Samson and Sasquatch into one super-strong gamma hero. Unfortunately, that happened just as Gamma Flight came under new management, and now the team find themselves working for a sadistic Avengers foe who barely wants what's best for the planet, let alone his team. The new status quo is illustrated in the amazing preview pages from Marvel Comics below:

Henry Peter Gyrich is a longtime foe of the Avengers - the ultimate bureaucrat who will stop at nothing to hurt those with superpowers and bring them under government control. Gyrich's command of Alpha Flight - and Gamma Flight by proxy - is bad news for everyone in the Marvel universe, with Abigail Brand, the woman who previously held the position, categorizing him as an active threat to mutantkind over in S.W.O.R.D.

Sadly, Marvel's preview shows that while Gamma Flight may be made up of heroes - and even some pretty heroic former villains - the team are under Gyrich's sadistic thumb, as he threatens to have the Absorbing Man arrested, despite the fact Creel is only refusing to rejoin the team because he nearly died when the Hulk's Sunshine Joe persona shot out the windows of their space station and plunged to Earth. While Doc Sasquatch, Marvel's newest Hulk, is a hero, it's likely his muscle will be put to evil use by Gyrich, as his psychiatrist side is likely to feel he has a duty of care to the troubled but loyal people who make up the rest of the team.

As The Immortal Hulk barrels towards its ending with issue 50, Hulk's friends are less and less able to help him, leaving Hulk's least intelligent forms to prevent the rise of the Breaker of Worlds - Hulk's ultimate, planet-destroying form. The stakes couldn't be higher as The Immortal Hulk #42 hits stands and digital outlets January 13.
