Quentin Tarantino reveals the one Marvel movie he would make if he had a chance. Tarantino by his own counting has now made nine feature films, leaving him one shy of the ten he has promised to deliver. It’s yet to be seen when or if the filmmaker will make good on his promise of a tenth film and what that film will be, but for the time-being, he seems content to tackle non-film projects like his recent criticism book Cinema Speculation.

Whenever Tarantino does finally get down to making his tenth film (if indeed that film ever happens), it’s unlikely that he will tackle a work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, Tarantino recently said explicitly that he would not do a Marvel film even if asked, as Marvel directors are mere “hired hands” and not true auteurs. But if the opportunity ever arose for Tarantino to make a Marvel movie, and the terms of the deal allowed him to be more than a hired hand, the director does have a project in mind that he would like to take on. During an appearance to promote his Cinema Speculation book, Tarantino said the one comic book movie he would make is an adaptation of Marvel’s Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, a WW2 title starring Nick Fury himself (via Variety).

What Tarantino's Nick Fury Movie Would Be Like

The Howling Commandos in the MCU

Marvel fans are of course familiar with Nick Fury from his portrayal by Samuel L. Jackson in various MCU titles, Captain Marvel being the standout among them. But Nick Fury has had a rich comic book history as well, a history that includes the bizarrely-named Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. First published in 1963, the book sees a young Fury leading a crew of elite soldiers on missions into Europe during WW2. Among other things, the title is notable for its racially diverse cast of characters (Fury himself was of course white in Marvel Comics until 2000). And the Howling Commandos idea obviously later made its way to the MCU thanks to Captain America: The First Avenger.

Given Tarantino’s clear fondness for Jackson, it’s no surprise that he would focus on the MCU character played by that actor. But even beyond the Jackson connection, Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos just sounds like something Tarantino would be into. Indeed, a rough description of the Sgt. Fury story could be a synopsis of Tarantino’s own Inglourious Basterds, the over-the-top action movie about an elite crew of Nazi-hunting Jewish soldiers being unleashed on the European theater of WW2.

With Tarantino at the helm, this Nick Fury movie would clearly be nothing like anything else ever featured in the MCU. Ultra-violence would certainly be the name of the game, pushing the movie to a very un-MCU-like R-rating. As for the character of Fury himself, it would be hard to see Jackson actually playing the young WW2 version of him, unless serious deaging tech were employed. Realistically, a recast of Fury would likely be in the offing if the movie ever got made. But fans who would be mad at Fury being recast should not get too up-in-arms, as Tarantino’s Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos has almost no shot of ever happening.
