Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner never really knows what the Marvel Cinematic Universe films are going to look like until he sees them on the screen. The actor, who has played the part of Clint Barton/Hawkeye for just over ten years now, is an MCU veteran at this point. Hawkeye has been featured in five different Marvel films over the years, and now the character is finally starring in his own project with the Hawkeye series on Disney+. Renner's Hawkeye is only one of two original Avengers left on the MCU table that can lead his own series, with the other being Chris Hemsworth's Thor (Mark Ruffalo's Hulk can't receive his own film or series for contractual reasons).

The Hawkeye series on Disney+ may not be getting as much attention as this year's other titles like WandaVision or Loki, but the series has still generally been a success. Critics have praised the show for its street-level approach to the MCU, and many believed last week's third episode to be the best of the series yet. With the show teasing a mysterious Uncle figure, many fans online have been speculating that Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin could be mere weeks away from making his MCU debut. Renner has been heavily promoting the series, doing a number of interviews and appearing on various talk shows and internet series, and he recently shed some light on what the experience is like going from the set to the screen.

In an interview with GQ breaking down his various characters from over the years, Renner was asked about the filmmaking process on Marvel Studios projects. He responded by describing how different the experience is from smaller films like Wind River. He said that he's never entirely certain what the final product is actually going to look like and that he often is working without a complete picture of what's going on. His full quote reads:

"It's just different. I know what Wind River is gonna look like when it's done. I have no idea what a film is gonna look like in the Marvel universe. I have zero clue. I know the scenes we shot, when it's inside of a lab or something, but you don't know what the backdrop is or what the Hulk really looks like. It's completely different. But in the process of shooting it, some things inform you. You just focus on what you do know, and don't worry about the things you don't know or learn about the things you don't know. You just gotta do what you gotta do."

Renner expanded upon his comments by saying that he obviously does a lot more stunts as Hawkeye than his other characters. He said, "It's a lot of stunts also. And you're wearing the most inappropriate clothes to do the stunts. You do the best you can with the limitations and move forward." Renner's comments aren't surprising, as Marvel Studios' projects are often notoriously secretive. Sometimes, as was the case with Avengers: Endgame, actors might not even know who they're sharing a scene with. Additionally, the massive blockbusters are some of the most visual effects-heavy films Hollywood has to offer, which means many of Renner's scenes have likely been shot on green screens.

It's always interesting when an actor gives insight into what it's like to shoot a project. That's especially the case with anything produced by Marvel Studios since their sets are so locked down and secretive. Jeremy Renner's comments regarding Hawkeye highlight the lengths that the actors have to go to in order to give a believable performance, as they often aren't acting off anything. Most of the most exciting superhero scenes are entirely created digitally, which makes it all the more impressive when an actor can sell what's happening on screen.
