When adapting either a comic book or a novel to the big screen, it’s hard to keep every detail untouched on the jump from the pages to the big screen. Sometimes it’s a character’s backstory, sometimes a character might not make the cut, and other times those changes are all about the appearance – something commonly seen in superhero movies.
In the current era of superhero movie franchises, the objective is to bring these characters to our world in the most realistic way possible. A big part of their credibility lies in their costumes, which can be tricky depending on the character; it’s all about making them as loyal as possible to the source but not too comic-book-looking so as to remind us all the time that the character comes from, well, a comic book.
Just like their sources, the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have gone through a few makeovers from their first movie to their latest appearance. As the MCU keeps expanding, it’s becoming more and more difficult to keep track of every supersuit and its evolution, but thanks to Pokies.net, we now have a useful infographic with the evolution of the MCU superhero costumes.
Said infographic includes the Avengers and some new Avengers (Scarlet Witch and Ant-Man), as well as fan-favorite villain Loki and the MCU’s new addition, Doctor Strange. The image makes a comparison between the look of these heroes on their first comic appearance, the suits from all the movies from the MCU they have been in, and their latest comic representation. In most cases, their cinematic look has served as inspiration for the new comics, making their suits similar.
Some heroes have gone from suits a bit too detailed to simpler and more functional ones, such as Captain America and Black Widow; others have opted for simpler costumes for their cinematic adventures – such is the case of Scarlet Witch, whose clothing in the comics is very different from what we saw in Age of Ultron and Civil War.
In some cases, the details remain pretty much the same through the movies, only changing in color, like Thor’s (who, by the way, went through a major change in his latest comic adventure). And while Iron Man has gone through it all – from simple armors to highly detailed suits and back to a more “sober” look – the Hulk has had more subtle changes to his look, only changing the color of his pants.
So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has managed to make believable adaptations of their supersuits without losing the essence of each character, and while some of them have gone through radical changes in order to give a more believable look, it has all been better, to the point of influencing the original source. It’s going to be interesting to see how these suits will change for Avengers: Infinity War and the sequel solo movies, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp.
