The official teaser for Marvel's upcoming animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur has dropped. The series, which is being developed for the Disney Channel, doesn't seem to technically be part of the MCU, which has been primarily airing its series, live-action or animated, on Disney+. Although it was previously believed that Moon Girl would premiere in the winter, they have officially confirmed that fans can expect a release in summer 2022.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is based on the comic series of the same name, which debuted in 2015. The story follows genius youngster Lunella Lafayette, a 9-year-old who is described as the smartest character in the entire Marvel universe. She accidentally opens a time vortex that brings a 10-ton red T-Rex to modern-day New York City. In the comics, the pair have a mental link because she is an Inhuman. Together, they help fight crime in the Lower East Side and, of course, save the world.

Marvel just premiered the Moon Girl teaser with a special introduction from executive producer Laurence Fishburne, who also plays the trickster character The Beyonder. The short video then displays a series of clips showing the variety of animation styles that will be used to bring the series to life. By the looks of things, this is heavily inspired by Into the Spider-Verse in its color-soaked evocation of comic book panels in motion, giving Moon Girl and her more child-oriented adventures a bright, poppy feel that is dynamic and full of energy. Check out the video below:

The cast of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is stacked with familiar faces (and voices) alongside newcomers. Diamond White (The Lion Guard) will voice Moon Girl opposite Fred Tatasciore (Marvel's Avengers Assemble) as Devil Dinosaur. The rest of the cast is filled out by Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage) as Lunella's grandmother Mimi, Gary Anthony Williams (Doc McStuffins) as her grandfather Pops, Libe Barer (Sneaky Pete) as her best friend Casey, Sasheer Zamata (SNL) as her mom Adria, and Jermaine Fowler (Superior Donuts) as her dad James.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur may not connect to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole or further its story in the way ravenous fans might want. However, it looks to be a delightful sugar rush of an animated series that highlights a Black heroine in a loving and eye-popping way. The fact that Marvel comics are still capable of producing something so fresh and exciting even a decade into their domination of Western pop culture is a rather remarkable feat.
