Update 8/26: This article has been updated to remove references to Midnight Suns as an RTS game.

2K Games’ new XCOM-style superhero game has been revealed as Marvel's Midnight Suns, which promises to dive into the darker, more supernatural side of the Marvel Universe. This was just one of the many new games shown off at today's Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live livestream event, which featured new looks at Call Of Duty: Vanguard and a brand new Saint’s Row reboot.

Word of a new Marvel by XCOM and Civilization developer Firaxis first leaked back in June, along with a slew of other 2K projects including a new Borderlands spin-off. Even more details came forward in another leak earlier this month, which suggested that this new Marvel game would feature none of the familiar Marvel characters, instead showing a fresh take on the Marvel Universe. It turns out that Captain America and the rest of the Avengers will be reporting for duty in the Marvel squad tactics game after all, along with some nightmarish new faces.

During today’s Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live livestream showcase, 2K Games and developer Firaxis unveiled an exciting teaser for its new superhero game, now titled Marvel's Midnight Suns. This trailer features supernatural heroes like Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider performing a ritual to awaken a mysterious entity to combat a new threat. From there, viewers are treated to the sight of characters like Wolverine, Captain Marvel, and Blade in battle against a demonic army, led by a demonic woman who just so happens to be the mother of the new ally the heroes have awakened. The end of the trailer then teases a full gameplay reveal for Marvel's Midnight Suns on September 1. Afterward, Firaxis Creative Director Jake Solomon discussed the game’s new characters: the fully customizable Hunter and the villainous Lilith.

Marvel has been going through something of a gaming renaissance of sorts over the past few years, thanks to Insomniac’s excellent Marvel's Spider-Man titles and Eidos Montreal’s promising Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. There are even rumors that Mortal Kombat and Injustice developer NetherRealm is working on a Marvel fighting game based on the House Of Ideas’ most noteworthy characters, but recent reports that it is currently working on Mortal Kombat 12 put that in doubt. Meanwhile, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics recently added to Marvel’s Avengers with the Black Panther: War For Wakanda DLC expansion, which puts players in the role of T'Challa as he teams up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes to protect his homeland from the forces of Ulysses Klaue and AIM.

Marvel's Midnight Suns looks like an exciting take on the popular heroes of Marvel comics and cinema that mixes classic characters with a brand-new hero that players will be able to fully customize. 2K Games and Firaxis are planning to show off Marvel's Midnight Suns gameplay in September, so interested fans will get a chance to see more of this interesting superhero title sooner rather than later.
