While fans continue to wait until the official release of Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue to troll them on social media by updating their profile picture and adding a subtle jab. With Avengers: Infinity War having ended on a shocking cliffhanger that killed off half of the life in the universe, including Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Bucky Barnes, fans have been eager to watch the Phase 3 conclusion Avengers: Endgame to see who will actually survive for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The upcoming Avengers: Endgame, whose first trailer was released earlier this month and set a record with 289 million views in its first 24 hours online, is arguably the most hotly anticipated film of 2019. It is expected to pick up right after Thanos’ snap, called the Decimation, that ended Avengers: Infinity War, and which saw many of the heroes turned to dust as Thanos himself took a step back while still in control of the Infinity Stones. The trailer shows Tony Stark, aka. Iron Man, stuck in space after being stranded on Titan with Nebula, although it’s unclear where she is. Meanwhile on Earth, Captain America Steve Rogers is attempting to come to grips with the Decimation while Black Widow tracks down Hawkeye, who was noticeably absent from Avengers: Infinity War and appears to have become Ronin at this point. We also briefly see Bruce Banner, Thor, and an apparently rescued Ant-Man, who fans last saw stuck in the Quantum Realm during the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

With everyone’s attention now heightened for any scrap of news regarding the upcoming film, the Russo brothers have taken to Twitter to troll fans one more time using their profile picture. In the photo, fans can see Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal at a holiday party, and it appears they are laughing at the expense of Ryan Reynolds who is wearing a festive sweater. Over top of the photo, the Russos have tagged Jackman as “Anthony Russo,” Gyllenhaal as “Joe Russo,” and Reynolds as “fans” - clearly suggesting that they are laughing it up since they know what’s coming in the MCU and fans are out of the loop.

This is not the first time that the Russos, who have also helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War in addition to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, have trolled fans. Back before the Avengers 4 title was revealed, they quickly posted and deleted a joke on social media that suggested it would be called “Infinite Kusama” - a reference to an installation at The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston by Yayoi Kusama, and not the MCU. At this point, however, it would seem that everyone is trying their best to make light of the suspense, with NASA even issuing an official response to hilarious demands from fans that a rescue mission be undertaken to save Stark.

With roughly four months to go until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, fans should be on high alert that any new “updates” are potentially a decoy or joke at their expense. That said, it’s clearly all in good fun, and Marvel Studios is more than making it up to fans by also releasing Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019 in addition to Avengers: Endgame.
