Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater reveals he wants to adapt Excalibur for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and shares his vision for the project. Originally created by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, the superhero team made their Marvel Comics debut with 1987's Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn and served as a spin-off from the X-Men. The original Excalibur team in the comics was formed by former X-Men members Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, the Rachel Summers incarnation of Phoenix and Lockheed and also included Captain Britain and his lover, the mutant empath and shapeshifter Meggan.

Slater first got his hands on a Marvel project in the form of 2015's Fantastic Four movie, which he co-wrote with director Josh Trank and Simon Kinberg, though the film proved to be a critical and commercial failure, which he attributed to a difference in vision with Trank and studio interference. After going on to create and executive produce the TV adaptation of The Exorcist and penning the script for the pilot of Netflix's The Umbrella Academy, Slater would return to the Marvel fold with the Disney+ series Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac in the titular role. With the MCU show already scoring largely positive reviews from critics, the writer is keeping his eyes peeled for other potential opportunities within the franchise.

In time for the show's premiere, Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater took to Twitter to open the floor to questions from fans. One such question posed would be which other Marvel characters he would like to tackle, to which Slater revealed his desire to adapt Excalibur for the MCU and shared his vision for the project. Outside of their being an X-Men spinoff, Excalibur was best known for their dimension-hopping adventures thanks to the help of the dimension-hopping robot known as Widget. This robot actually hailed from the universe known as Earth-811, better known as the Days of Future Past timeline, in which Kate Pryde no longer goes by the names of Shadowcat or Kitty Pryde and initially traps her mind in the body of the Widget robot while attempting to help Rachel Summers escape to the timeline in which Sentinels no longer rule and hunt down mutants. Widget would eventually regain her memory as Kate and return to her timeline to restore order to the world by reprogramming the Sentinels.

Though a lot of Excalibur's adventures and characters sound difficult to introduce to the MCU, many upcoming plans for the long-running franchise have established the possibility of introducing the superhero team to the fold. Given Phase Four of the MCU is exploring the concept of the multiverse, mostly notably with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and studio head Kevin Feige has confirmed plans to introduce some version of the X-Men to the universe, the dimension-hopping team could see the light of day sometime in the future. With Slater's work on Moon Knight currently receiving a positive reception, the door does seem open for him to bring his vision for Excalibur to life.
