A fan artist has designed a series of six pieces that reimagine Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes as villains from the Disney canon. There are certainly many heroes to choose from, considering that there are currently a total of 26 films in the franchise, which started over a decade ago with 2008's Iron Man. There are also 7 upcoming MCU films with confirmed dates, and countless more in development, not to mention the TV series, most of which are streaming on Disney+.

The Disney company hasn't always had its current relationship with Marvel. Marvel Entertainment was acquired by Disney in August of 2009, after the release of the unpopular The Incredible Hulk, the film that has been most retconned and ignored by the MCU at large. There was a gap of nearly 2 years between Hulk and the next MCU film, Iron Man 2, which then began to build up the shared universe that fans know and love today.

Knowing the tight relationship that Marvel media now has with Disney, Instagram artist Anastasia Ivanova shares some impeccable artwork reimagining Marvel heroes as Disney villains. This project started around Halloween, with art aptly depicting Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch as Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, marking her MCU descent into potential villainy. Now, Ivanova has developed designs showing Sam Wilson/Falcon as The Princess and the Frog's Dr. Facilier, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier as Peter Pan's Captain Hook, Agatha Harkness as Tangled's Mother Gothel, Loki as Hercules' Hades, and Doctor Strange as Aladdin's Jafar. Each mashup is more well-thought out than merely putting two different properties together into a single art piece. For instance, Loki and Hades are both figures from mythology being brought to life in new contexts, as well as charismatic villains who tend to be just as beloved as the heroes they face off against. There's a connection in each entry, even the subtler ones: although she didn't use a tower like Mother Gothel, Agatha Harkness did treat the Scarlet Witch like Rapunzel by trapping her in a limited world.

This is just the smallest sampling of heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, largely plucked from the Disney+ streaming series that have lit up the platform throughout the year. This set of pieces is a reminder of how robust the world of the franchise has become, and with any luck Ivanova will see fit to apply that fertile imagination to even more characters. There are certainly enough Disney villains still remaining to offer up unique comparisons.
