Marvel continues to dominate both on big screen and small, with a slate of films and TV shows lined up, building on the already impressive Marvel Universe. While the blockbuster movies are all well and good, over on Netflix Marvel is also going great guns, after two well-received seasons of Daredevil as well as the freshman outing for Jessica Jones, which drew great critical acclaim. Forming the Defenders, Daredevil and Jessica Jones will ultimately team up with Luke Cage, but before that, he gets a series of his own.
Mike Colter plays the eponymous ex-con/bar tender/sometimes lover of Jessica Jones. After a science experiment goes wrong, he is left with unbreakable skin and virtually invincible, though he seems to have an uncanny ability to attract trouble. Luke Cage's premiere season picks up after the destruction of his bar in Jessica Jones, as Luke makes his way to Harlem to start afresh.
An appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in the coming few days holds a strong possibility for us getting our first glimpse of footage from the series. However, in the meantime, a new Luke Cage image has been released via Comic Book and can be seen, below.
While Luke is clearly dressed to impress, the image doesn't really give much away, other than, in the background, there seems to be a large collection of drinks. Have Luke's bar skills taken him up in the world? Is he now running a classy, high-end establishment? Well, maybe, or maybe he's just doing some schmoozing with some politicians. While not much is known about Luke Cage, Colter did reveal the show will focus on corrupt politicians who claim to have Harlem's best interests at heart, but who are ultimately harming the community.
In that respect, the plotline sounds similar to that of Daredevil season one, where Wilson Fisk claimed to always be acting for the good of Hell's Kitchen, but with Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes as well as Stokes’ cousin Mariah Dillard and the bionic-armed vigilante Misty Knight set as the villains. As it were, Luke Cage has been described by showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker as "The Wire of Marvel Television."
If what Coker says is indeed the case, this would set Luke Cage apart as a very different type of show to either Daredevil or Jessica Jones. That could well have interesting repercussions when the big team-up happens, since all three shows will have set their own unique tones - even before you incorporate Iron Fist into the mix.
For now though, all attention turns to SDCC and the Luke Cage Panel, where Colter and Hodari Coker will appear with Colter's co-star, Alfre Woodard. Fans will also have the opportunity to get their hands on a new poster for the show at Comic-Con (from artist Joe Quesada).
Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher spinoff on Netflix have not yet been announced. Daredevil season 3 has yet to be confirmed.
