Comics are great at exploring every type of character and personality. They are home to characters of any race, gender, or of any sexuality under the sun. Marvel comics has seemingly always demonstrated their open-minded ways with the allegories used in the X-Men franchise; providing social commentary on racial issues as well as the LGBTQ+ community.

Over the many decades, Marvel Comics has introduced a plethora of characters in the LGBTQ+ community. They have even rebooted and revised some characters to fit into said community. Some are iconic for their representation, while others may surprise fans.

Deadpool (Wade Wilson)

Yes, the fourth-wall-breaking Merc With A Mouth has had several girlfriends in the past including Domino, Vanessa Carlyle, and even Rogue from the X-Men. However, Deadpool is not afraid to try new things, and this is why he is now famous for being a pansexual character.

Deadpool has shown sexual interest in Wolverine in the past, and he has a lover named Shiklah who only appears as a woman. Their true form is a genderless demon, but much to their surprise, he is still attracted to them. One of Deadpool's most famous relationships is with Death, who appears as nothing but a skeleton, and yet, they have fun together.

Viv (Vivian Vision)

ivian Kisses Ironheart - Marvel Comics

Vivian is the synthezoid daughter of Vision, created quite recently in 2015. Vision wanted to be more human-like, so he created his own family, including Vivian. Viv features many of the same abilities as her father and also has many of the same personality traits.

However, Vivian is much more emotional than her father. Her sexuality was a mystery until she kissed Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart. She also hinted at her sexuality when she stated that she has zero attraction to boys.

Hulkling (Teddy Altman)

Wiccan and Hulkling kissing in Marvel Comics.

The original Captain Mar-Vell and Princess Anelle of the Skrull Empire had fallen in love. The result of this love was a child whom Anelle named Dorrek VIII. However, he was raised as Teddy Altman on Earth for years, until learning his origin and becoming the hero known as Hulkling.

Hulkling fell in love with the hero Wiccan and they went steady for years. Finally, in Empyre #4, Marvel featured the two tying the knot with a beautiful wedding. Hulkling and Wiccan made history and as icing on top, they are quite the cute couple.

Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier)

Northstar Marrying Kyle - X-Men Comics

Before Teddy Altman, the first same-sex wedding in comic book history featured Northstar and his husband Kyle. Introduced in 1979, Northstar is arguably the first gay Marvel character as well. It was not revealed until 1992 that he was openly queer, but since then, the character has remained a great example of representation.

Unfortunately, there was some controversy when the leading gay character nearly died from AIDS. Marvel also attempted to kill the character several times, but he always bounced back. He even found a happy ending in 2011 when the Astonishing X-Men had him marry Kyle Jinadu.

Mystique (Raven Darkholme)

Mystique Transformations

Another X-Men character who can morph into any person she wants. With that kind of ability, it's no surprise she is capable of loving all genders since she can be any gender. This was shown with her romance with Destiny, and this was not a fling, these two were absolutely in love.

It was originally intended that Destiny and Mystique were going to be the biological parents of Nightcrawler. Mystique was going to change her anatomy in order to conceive with Destiny, but the Comic Code Authority vetoed this idea.

Ultimate Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)

Ultimate Spider-Woman Jessica Drew from Marvel Comics

In the Ultimate universe, Jessica Drew is a genetically designed clone of Peter Parker, with the obvious difference being that she is a woman. Jessica retained all of Peter's abilities, but that is not all: she also seemed to keep Peter's love for women.

When she took on the role of Black Widow for the All-New Ultimates, she admitted that she was a lesbian to her team. She's never had a significant other that the comics focused on but it does tackle both sexuality and transgender topics with the character.

Loki

Lady Loki from Marvel Comics

Gender-fluid and pansexual, Loki has had quite an interesting life. Much like Mystique, he is a shapeshifter, which lends to his gender fluidity. In the Loki: Agent Of Asgard series, he is confirmed to love all kinds of people. Even those who have read Norse mythology will know that Loki has changed genders and even became a mother.

In the comics, Loki seems to embody different gender expressions easily, as he occupied a woman's body as Lady Loki, and his spirit possessed Lady Sif and altered her to make her look closer to a female version of himself.

Miss America (America Chavez)

America Chavez AKA Miss America

Miss America is already an awesome character, with the ability to create star-shaped energy blasts and open interdimensional portals. For a great big bonus, she is also Marvel's first Latin-American LGBTQ+ character.  America Chavez is openly lesbian and much like DC's Batwoman, the character is treated with respect and care.

While they've never delved into a fully realized relationship, fans have noticed that America and Kate Bishop seem really close. With Kate Bishop and Miss America being introduced in future projects, fans hope the two end up as a couple in the future of the MCU.

Valkyrie

Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in Thor Ragnarok

In Marvel Comics, Valkyrie has a relationship with anthropologist Annabelle Riggs. In other comics, it has also been stated that she has had relationships with men in the past as well. This part of the character struck a chord with actress Tessa Thompson, who plays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tessa Thompson has made it known that she proudly plays Valkyrie as a bisexual woman. She also has stated that she would love to see her have a girlfriend in Thor: Love And Thunder. Both Tessa and Brie Larson have expressed interest in having their characters become an item.

Iceman (Bobby Drake)

Iceman AKA Bobby Drake in Marvel Comics

One of the more surprising characters to come out as gay would definitely be Iceman. For years, the character was portrayed as a seemingly heterosexual character; especially in the X-Men movies when he was portrayed by Shawn Ashmore.

However, that changed in 2015 when the character came out as queer and in love with the character Anole. While there were hints about his sexuality in the past, it was great that Marvel brought him out officially. Bobby Drake has since become one of the faces of the Marvel LGBTQ+ community.
