Arguably the most popular member of the X-Men ever created, Wolverine has a terrible habit of dying and returning in Marvel Comics. His most recent death was in 2014's The Death of Wolverine, but it didn't seem to stick. Thus, Marvel is apparently killing the character again - and the company will release not one, but two new books to tell the tale.

Wolverine's mutant power, an incredibly potent healing factor that allows him to heal from nearly any injury, means the character can take quite a bit of punishment that would kill any other human. His other abilities - heightened senses, claws on each hand and a skeleton covered in adamantium - also lend to the character's aggressive nature and his penchant for picking plenty of fights. With that in mind, it's no wonder Wolverine often finds himself in life-or-death situations (that occasionally end in death).

Now Wolverine is set to be the star of two connected series from Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara and Federico Vicentini, and it appears his death(s) will take center stage. After the First Krakoan Age of the X-Men (the soft reboot of the X-Men spearheaded by writer Jonathan Hickman), a statement on Marvel.com announces "...X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will test 'the best there is at what he does' before any mutant can survive to the Second Krakoan Age." Together, the titles will chronicle "...what happens to Wolverine when...His Past Meets His Future."

Wolverine's first notable death was in Days of Future Past when a Sentinel vaporized the hero, leaving only his skeleton behind. Others quickly followed: the villain Sublime took away his healing factor and killed him in Grant Morrison's New X-Men, the mutant Dust blasted Wolverine's skin off his body in Young X-Men (again, leaving only his skeleton), and both Deadpool and the Punisher took his life in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe and The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, respectively. In 2014's The Death of Wolverine, Wolverine lost his healing abilities permanently, and some time later was covered in molten adamantium by Dr. Cornelius, suffocating him. Of course, Wolverine returned from the dead in Return of Wolverine four years later.

Perhaps this is part of the stories told in X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine: the repeated deaths and resurrections and their impact on Wolverine's mind. Both series will release January 2022, when fans will see what exactly Wolverine's past meeting his future will entail - and exactly how he will die again. Until then, the X-Men's premiere hero Wolverine is indeed the best at what he does: dying and walking it off.
