A since-deleted tweet posted by Marvel UK has reignited hopes that Keanu Reeves will one day join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reeves has been a household name since the '80s, but his resurgence over the past decade with the John Wick franchise, Toy Story 4, and Bill & Ted Face the Music (as well as a persona not usually associated with Hollywood) has turned him into one of the most beloved movie stars of all time. As the actor continues to dominate both the internet and the silver screen in the upcoming The Matrix: Resurrections and John Wick: Chapter 4, fans can’t help but want to see Reeves join the one pop culture space he has yet to grace: the MCU.

Throughout 24 films, Marvel Studios has snagged an impressive amount of talent for its universe. Phase 4 of the MCU will implement A-listers including Moon Knight’s Oscar Isaac to Eternals’ Angelina Jolie, both on the big screen and Disney+. Reeves was once rumored to be in Eternals and has been fan cast as everyone from Moon Knight and Wolverine to Ghost Rider and Namor. Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, has even said they’ve talked with Reeves about nearly every MCU film, but they’re waiting for the perfect role.

On Thursday, the official Twitter account for Marvel UK wished Reeves (57) a happy birthday. The tweet sent the internet into a frenzy and inevitably led to speculation that Reeves had agreed to join the MCU in some way. Check the since-deleted tweet (via Hadeed Butt) out below:

It’s worth emphasizing that Marvel UK most likely deleted the tweet because of the chaos it was causing. It’s doubtful this was anything but a nice tweet. Given Feige and Marvel Studios’ penchant for secrecy, if Reeves were in talks to join the MCU, those managing Marvel’s social media accounts would not be in the know. Whoever decided to wish Reeves a happy birthday is probably just a fan, who, like the rest of us, really wants to see him receive the Marvel treatment. That being said, it seems only a matter of time before the studio appeases fans and has him appear in one of their many franchises.

Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four as well as multiversal concepts introduced in Loki and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, there are a seemingly infinite number of heroes and villains set to hit the MCU. Echoing Feige’s comments, there's no point in rushing Reeves’ breathtaking inclusion, because the right role can and will present itself. For now, The Matrix: Resurrections will release in theaters this December, and Reeves is currently filming his latest John Wick outing—a franchise he’s said can continue as long as fans remain interested.
