Marvel & IMAX Celebrate 10 Years in Avengers: Infinity War Video

After 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, IMAX has released a preview in conjunction with Marvel Studios to celebrate their illustrious relationship.

While IMAX is currently held as the gold standard of movie making, it really hit the big time thanks to Christopher Nolan's use on Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight. The MCU may have been a little slower than its DC counterparts to catch up, but these days, everything from Iron Man 2 to Black Panther has looked that little bit better when supersized on an IMAX screen. Looking back over the history of the MCU, it is only Iron ManThe Incredible Hulk, and Captain America: The First Avenger that went with a standard theatrical release, which has undoubtedly left fans missing out.

Now, to explain just why the vivid shades of the MCU work so well with IMAX, the great and the good of MCU have shared their thoughts on how the technology goes hand-in-hand with Marvel superhero movies. As Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi says, "It's like having the TV screen smashed into your face."

Among the other fans are James Gunn, Tessa Thompson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Evans, and even Kevin Feige himself. Only recently, Black Panther's colorful trip to Wakanda was showcased in IMAX glory, while the upcoming battle with Josh Brolin's Thanos in Infinity War promises to take the experience to the next level. As Feige warns, if viewers don't go and see Infinity War in IMAX, they will be missing out on parts of the movie's magic.

Given that Black Panther's IMAX pre-sales were bigger than those for any previous MCU movie, the relationship between the franchise and IMAX is clearly one that is working out to be profitable. IMAX may be more expensive than a standard theater ticket, but it proves to worth the extra dollars to get that full immersive experience. You only have to listen to the various MCU directors to understand what thought process they go through when imagining their movies as an IMAX feature.

While IMAX is still somewhat exclusively used by filmmakers like Nolan - on such movies as Interstellar and Dunkirk - the technology has advanced into the mainstream with anyone and everyone wanting a piece of the action. Considering that Infinity War aims to be something of a big deal with its IMAX scenes, audiences can only imagine what the Russo Brothers will be doing with Avengers 4 in 2019. Before that though, Ant-Man and the Wasp will also make significant use of IMAX, with Captain Marvel presumed to follow suit thereafter. With both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and IMAX celebrating their time working together, it will surely be a long-lasting relationship that will take the MCU into Phase 4 and beyond - maybe even another 10 years.
