The Incredible Hulk is one of Marvel’s most popular characters, as well as one of the most intriguing. He is a scientist who became a monster and has to battle his inner demons and a society that is against everything he stands for, which makes him a tragic and beloved hero for many comic book readers.

However, while Hulk has been a Marvel staple for decades, there are still people who can’t seem to agree on what makes him great. Reddit is a perfect place to debate geek issues, and there are plenty of people there with some unpopular opinions about The Hulk, as well as those who like to discuss them.

Thor Could Defeat Hulk

Hulk punches Thor through a wall.

When considering fantasy battles, it is fun to predict who could beat who when major heroes battle each other. Marvel has done this plenty of times in Contest of Champions, Secret Wars, and Civil War. However, @spidersting said that in a fight with Hulk, "Thor could [win] if he went all out against him."

This is not an opinion that many people carry because Hulk has shown time and time again that he can beat Thor. While Thor might be one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, even stronger than Thanos, Hulk has no limits to his strength, and his regeneration skills make him almost unkillable.

Hulk is a monster whose primary fight is against himself as he tries to contain his rage and keep himself under control. According to @dappercat456, Hulk’s main enemy is himself, which is correct, but he says, “hulk doesn’t have the most notable rogues gallery, it’s there, but they’re usually just random monster characters for him to punch or generic evil scientists.”

Saying he has no notable villains is an unpopular opinion because Hulk has several great villains in comics. @dappercat456 mentioned The Leader and Abomination, but add in Gen. Ross, Wendigo, Maestro, Absorbing Man, Zzzax, Agamemnon, and The U-Foes, and there are some great villains there. If adding heroes, there is also The Thing and Wolverine.

World War Hulk Was Not Good

Critics and readers considered Planet Hulk one of Hulk’s best stories. Sadly, tragedy struck when Hulk’s wife died and he set off for Earth to make the heroes who banished him pay. According to @timbomber on Reddit, World War Hulk was “not a great story.”

This was in response to the original poster who felt the tie-in issues made it feel bloated. With that said, it is an unpopular opinion, as the series introduced World Breaker Hulk, one of the most popular versions of the character, and showed all Hulk fans how powerful he could be, even when fighting Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Hulk Is Not A Tragic Hero

Hulk vs Devil Hulk by the water.

One of the key things about Hulk in Marvel Comics is that he is a tragic hero. He is a scientist who underwent a transformation into a monster that the world fears. However, @DBSdidnothingwrong wrote on Reddit that “Hulk you start thinking he is a tragic figure but then you learn he is simply a dick.”

This is an unpopular opinion as Hulk is a tragic figure, one who is almost a Frankenstein’s Monster who wants to do good, but people fear and hate him for it. While Banner has problems, it is not fair to blame him for what happens to Hulk, especially when people attack him more than he provokes anyone else.

Hulk Would Be Mid-Tier Strength In DC

If there is one thing that most Hulk fans agree on, it is that he is the strongest hero in Marvel Comics. However, @MisterBastahrd posted that “Hulk might be the strongest in the MU, but he’d be mid-tier at DC unless he got REALLY upset, and he’d never last long enough against the heavy hitters to find out.”

Since Hulk has the rage effect, where the angrier he gets, the stronger he gets. As Worldbreaker Hulk, he defeated almost all Marvel’s top heroes and only went down when he finally gave up. While Superman could possibly defeat Hulk, no one else in DC would really stand a chance when Hulk gets angry enough.

Red Hulk Should Not Be In The Avengers

Red Hulk breathing fire in Marvel Comics.

In the pages of The Avengers, Steve Rogers welcomed one of the most powerful versions of Hulk, Red Hulk, to the team after Gen. Ross regained his sanity. Bruce Banner even helped save his life. @dappercat456 posted on Reddit that he hated Red Hulk as an Avenger, saying “Personally I wouldn’t want a warmongering military a**hole like Ross to be an avengers.”

This is an unpopular opinion, as it goes against what The Avengers are. They have always been a government-controlled team, have always welcomed former villains, and have multiple military-type heroes in the team’s history. Plus, Captain America is who invited him onto the team.

Hulk Shouldn’t Be Morally Ambiguous

One of the best things about Hulk is that he doesn’t want to be bad, but he often has to fight his rage from overcoming him. That was not a problem with Joe Fixit, but @Ashy_Lawrence wrote that he’s “not a huge fan of the “morally ambiguous” nature of Joe Fixit as a character.”

That has proven to be a very unpopular opinion, as Joe was the smart grey side of Banner’s persona, and that ended up as a critically acclaimed Hulk run. Joe Fixit’s return to Immortal Hulk was also widely praised, with fans loving seeing him back in the comics again.

Al Ewing Ruined Immortal Hulk

Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk run has been one of the best critically acclaimed story arcs since Peter David worked on the title. However, there are some fans like @LETUSTOWATCHSOMETO who wrote “Losing story short, it started of great. Very good. Maintained itself for some time. And then BLAM politics everywhere for 5 to 7 issues.”

Fans hotly debated this in the Reddit thread, mostly because the issues dealt with Hulk fighting to protect the planet, especially from companies like Roxxon. It is the same sort of stories that appear in everything from X-Men to The Fantastic Four, with heroes trying to save the world. Immortal Hulk never missed a beat in its run.

Amadeus Cho Should Have Replaced Hulk

Amadeus Cho becomes Awesome Hulk.

There was a point where Hulk began to over-radiate and Amadeus Cho used his superior intellect to stop him, but ended up becoming the Hulk. According to @AT-TE-212 on Reddit, he “liked Amadeus Cho as a Hulk. And at this point I feel like Amadeus will inevitably replace Banner in the MCU.”

This proved to be a very unpopular opinion in the comments. Most Reddit users pointed out that Cho was better as the genius Cho and never needed to become Hulk, and later Brawn. Cho was always at his best when he was a Hercules and Hulk sidekick.
