One of the funniest scenes in Avengers: Endgame is the big reveal of Bruce Banner as Professor Hulk. Banner’s new, intelligent Hulk persona is articulate, wears shirts, and sports an oversized pair of glasses that he uses throughout the film. While it's an amusing look, it begs the question – does the Hulk really need to wear glasses?

Banner has worn glasses in key scenes in multiple MCU films, indicating that he uses them to help him read. Of course the Hulk hasn’t spent much time reading books in the earlier movies – so could he have had vision problems all this time?

It’s an intriguing question – and one possibly supported by what we know of the Hulk through comic books. In the comics, Bruce Banner is established as having multiple personalities – with each personality controlling a different Hulk. Banner’s gamma-irradiated body literally transforms into a different form for each personality, allowing him to become the savage green Hulk, cunning grey Hulk, yellow “devil” Hulk, and several other monsters.

While each Hulk is incredibly strong, the personalities do come with several unique differences. Aside from obviously different skin tones, the Hulks vary in intelligence (with some sharing Banner’s amazing IQ and others being barely capable of speech). Certain Hulks also heal faster than others and can grow more powerful depending on how well Banner allows each one to be fueled by rage.

One strange power all Hulks seem to share to varying degrees is an ability to adapt to hostile environments. One of the green, intelligent Hulks once developed the ability to breathe underwater while fighting in the ocean. Likewise, the current “Immortal Hulk” can repair virtually any kind of damage done to his organs, even after being completely dismembered, giving him the ability to literally raise himself (and Banner) from the dead. Given this fact, it would seem that simple vision problems would be easy for any Hulk to overcome. They would simply have to focus on whatever they wanted to see, and let their adaptive powers reshape their eyes into an optimal configuration.

However, the issue with Hulk’s vision isn’t that simple. When Rick Jones caught Professor Hulk reading in his room, he noticed this Hulk was wearing glasses. While this was largely done as a sight gag to poke fun at Superman’s inane “Clark Kent disguise,” the Hulk also mentioned that he always felt more comfortable reading with glasses on. Given that his transformations are also fueled by Banner’s self-image, it’s very possible Banner caused his Professor Hulk’s body to need glasses even though the Hulk’s powers could just make them redundant.

Because of this, it’s likely the Professor Hulk seen in Avengers: Endgame really does need glasses – at least for reading. Banner may have been able to overcome the Hulk’s savage instincts when he “put the brains and the brawn together,” but he still saw himself as someone who needed glasses to read – giving eye doctors in the MCU a very unusual client.
