Mark Ruffalo pitches an MCU Hulk film following what Bruce Banner aka Hulk was up to be in between Avengers movies. It's been almost eight years since the actor took over the role from Edward Norton, who was the franchise's original pick to play the Hulk. While Ruffalo has played the part more times, he has still yet to star in his own film, unlike his predecessor who got his chance in Louis Terrier's The Incredible HulkThings could be different if Marvel Studios listens to the actor's latest suggestion.

Debuting in Joss Whedon's 2012 film, The AvengersRuffalo's version of the Hulk is accepted as essentially the same as Norton's with MCU preserving its continuity. Since then, he's appeared in four more films - Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and last year's Avengers: Endgame. Since his latest outing, however, there's no official word yet on what's next for the character aside from reports that he'll be in the upcoming She-Hulk series - something that is apparently not yet set in stone. With people on the lookout for where they can see the green rage monster again on screen, Ruffalo meanwhile is pushing for a standalone movie.

Speaking with Variety, Ruffalo laid out his idea for a potential Hulk standalone in the MCU. Instead of chronicling what the future has in store for the character, he wants it to feature what he was doing in between Avengers movies.

There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting. We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies.

Bruce Banner in Avengers compound in Avengers: Endgame

Ruffalo didn't reveal if he's formally submitted this idea to Kevin Feige or anyone else at Marvel Studios, although he's previously said that he's had talks about where the character might go after Endgame. Although they'd have to iron out the character rights with Universal, this makes sense. The MCU is already taking this approach in Scarlett Johansson and Cate Shortland's Black Widow film, which works around the title character's death by setting its story between Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War. Perhaps Ruffalo's pitch could be set in the five-year time jump in Endgame when he found a way to bring together Hulk and Bruce Banner to be Smart Hulk. This is one of the bigger questions left by the movie and is frankly something that Marvel Studios should explain before they move forward with Smart Hulk.

Aside from calls to reveal how Hulk transformed into Smart Hulk, making the character's potential standalone a prequel would also give fans back MCU Banner, which would offer Ruffalo the opportunity to really flex his acting muscles. After The Avengers and Age of Ultron and as the character becomes more humorous, fans never really got to see the more nuanced take on the Hulk's alter-ego. It would be great to see him coping with their Infinity War failure by working on himself.
