Warning! Spoilers ahead for Heroes Reborn #3

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Heroes Reborn, the new Phoenix is worried that she's become the next Scarlet Witch, fearing that she's responsible for all of the major changes to reality that have hit the Marvel Universe. Not unlike Wanda Maximoff and the House of M storyline, reality has been drastically altered, seeing the Avengers having never assembled and the Squadron Supreme of America having become Earth's Mightiest Heroes. While the vast majority aren't aware of the world that was, it seems as though the new Phoenix, Maya Lopez, remembers, which is why she's so concerned that she might the reason everything has changed.

Most of Heroes Reborn #3 from writer Jason Aaron with artists Federico Vicentini and Ed McGuinness focuses on the Squadron's Blur and his battle with the Silver Witch (a version of Wanda who gained her brother's speed after his death). However, the end of the issue focuses on Maya. Having been imprisoned in the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane, the new Phoenix, also known as Echo, is one of the few heroes who still remembers reality as it should be in the Marvel Universe, just like Blade the Vampire Hunter and the Incredible Hulk.

However, Echo is very worried that she's the root cause for all of the changes to reality, believing that it can't be a mere coincidence that everything changed on her first day on the job working alongside the Avengers. She knows the power of the Phoenix can be volatile and chaotic, capable of just as much destruction as its ability to create. Perhaps it destroyed the original reality in favor of building this new one? Echo is certainly worried that that's the case, following in the footsteps of Wanda Maximoff when the Scarlet Witch lost control of her abilities and created the whole new reality that was House of M.

While Echo is pretty ready to blame herself for all that has happened, it doesn't seem as though she's the instigator. Given the fact that the SSA used to be the brainwashed agents of Phil Coulson, who's now the president of the United States in this new reality, it seems likely that he holds a connection to whoever responsible. Additionally, readers of Marvel Comics past know that Coulson and his team of heroes were all tools to be used by none other than the Demon Lord Mephisto, and likely still are. As a result, it's safe to assume that the Lord of Hell himself is the real culprit.

Regardless of whether or not Echo is the one responsible, it's still a valid fear given the volatile nature of her new power. Thanks to the Phoenix Force, Maya has just as much of a capability to generate all of these changes as anyone else, even the Scarlet Witch. In any case, Blade and a newly freed Captain America soon arrive to break Echo out of Ravencroft, recruiting her to help restore reality in future issues of Heroes Reborn.
