The X-Men's Havok is turning into a monster. The younger brother of Cyclops, Havok has never been the most stable of mutants. In fact, on several occasions he's been brainwashed and turned into a villain - even leading one incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Back in 2014, Havok was one of the mutants affected by the "AXIS" event. A magical spell backfired, inverting everyone in its immediate area; heroes became villains, and vice versa. It didn't take long for the X-Men and the Avengers to wind up in outright war. But, in the end, the inversion was undone - for most people. Havok was one of the few whose mind was not put right, and - although he seemed to recover with the passage of time - he's been troubled ever since.

Newsarama has published an exclusive preview for Marvel's Hellions #1, in which the X-Men realize Havok isn't well at all. He's participating in a mission to deal with anti-mutant zealots on the anniversary of a mutant slaughter; their attack seems to trigger some sort of schizoid disorder, and Havok begins to brutally torture one of them. It's difficult to say exactly what's going on with Havok. For one thing, his current status is uncertain; is this the same Havok seen in the Matthew Rosenberg run, or has he been resurrected using the X-Men's Cerebro technology and cloning? The Rosenberg run ended with Havok expending his powers in an unusual way, exhausting them and literally dissolving; it was unclear whether he'd died, or simply converted into an energy state. The X-Men may well have assumed he was dead, and thus resurrected Havok, with Xavier perhaps unintentionally picking up both Havok's normal mind and the inverted, "AXIS" one. Such a copying error would explain the apparent onset of some sort of dissociative identity disorder.

One thing's for certain; the imminent return of Madelyne Pryor, aka the Goblin Queen, is sure to make matters worse. She's returning as the main villain of the Hellions book, and she has a dark history with Havok; during the "Inferno" event she transformed him into her Goblin Prince. No doubt she will have a strong appeal to the inverted, "AXIS" persona, perhaps meaning Havok will wind up betraying the X-Men. Supporting this theory, the cover of Hellions #4 deliberately evokes memories of the classic Uncanny X-Men #270, in which a branwashed Havok led an attack on the X-Mansion. The future looks very bleak indeed for Cyclops' younger brother.
