A new look at the upcoming Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy shows off Marvel's iconic space police force, the Nova Corps. Eidos-Montréal's sci-fi superhero action game will cast players as Peter Quill, better known as Star-Lord, and task them with leading the Guardians on an intergalactic adventure. A recent hands-on preview of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy showed off the single-player title's intense combat and wacky narrative.

While Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has players control Star-Lord exclusively, fellow Guardians Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax are integral to the experience. In combat players can issue commands to their four teammates, setting up combos such as Groot immobilizing an enemy so Gamora can deal a deadly blow with her sword. Role-playing mechanics allow players to interact with their allies in unique ways, which can change their disposition towards Quill. Developer Eidos-Montréal has also included other characters from throughout Marvel Comics' cosmic history, with Cosmo the Dog and his puppies acting as particularly adorable allies in the Guardians' quest.

On Twitter, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has given players a closer look at the Nova Corps. In the pages of Marvel Comics, this cosmic law enforcement faction is often heroic, with human member Richard Rider acting as a prominent superhero called Nova. However, in Eidos-Montréal's game, Nova Corps officers appear to be antagonistic, with the recent gameplay preview suggesting that a mysterious force is controlling them. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will add variety to combat by featuring different Nova Corps enemy types, including large Grenadiers, elite Officers and jetpack-wearing Centurions.

While the Nova Corps are quite recognizable to fans of Marvel Comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, other enemies in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy are much stranger. Eidos-Montréal recently showed off bizarre alien creatures in Guardians of the Galaxy which will appear to challenge Star-Lord and his team of outer-space outlaws. These monsters will hail from a variety of different intergalactic locations which will be visited throughout the game. The unsettling alien designs include flying manta rays, giant sea anemone, and plant-like monsters.

The Nova Corps is an established and recognizable faction within the Marvel Comics pantheon, with Nova himself being a prominent space-faring superhero. The faction's presence as enemies in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a bit surprising, but pre-release material suggests that mind control is to blame. Gamora's backstory connects her to Nova, and the two share a romance in the comics, so it is also very possible that Richard Rider will show his face in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at some point.
