A solo Groot movie could be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Vin Diesel says Marvel wants a Planet X film. Diesel joined the MCU almost a decade ago as he began lending his voice to Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, making him one of the franchise's main cast members. The Fast & Furious star has gone on to voice the tree-like alien in five MCU movies, as well as the recent I Am Groot Disney+ shorts. Groot's role in the franchise is confirmed to continue in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next year and another season of I Am Groot shorts.

Although Vin Diesel only plays a small part in the MCU, he is never shy about revealing details about Groot's future. The actor was the one to announce the Guardians of the Galaxy's appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder. He has also said that audiences will meet Alpha Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even though director James Gunn has denied that claim. Vin Diesel also has suggested that Kevin Feige is excited about Groot returning to his home planet in a future MCU project, but it has not been revealed when or if that will actually happen.

Now, Vin Diesel claims that Marvel wants to make a Groot solo movie about Planet X, Groot's homeworld in the comics. There are multiple Planet X's in Marvel's comic continuity, and one is the home for Groot's race of humanoid plants, known as Flora colossi. Diesel teased the potential Groot solo MCU movie in an Instagram post about his niece loving I Am Groot. Due to the positive response to the series, Diesel said, "No wonder Marvel wants to make a Planet X movie." There are currently no known plans for a Groot Planet X film at Marvel Studios.

Will Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Set Up Groot's Solo Movie?

Diesel's post that Marvel wants to make a Planet X movie is certainly a surprise, and it could mean that Guardians of the Galaxy 3's ending will set up this solo adventure for Groot. Gunn has described Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as the end for the original iteration of the team, leading to much speculation that some main characters will die. Groot is unlikely to exit the MCU with the Phase 5 movie, as he is a very popular character and someone who could be part of Marvel's franchise forever. However, the theories that Rocket will die in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would have a huge impact on Groot if they are correct, so a trip to Planet X could happen then.

It is somewhat difficult to imagine Marvel Studios wanting to make a solo Groot movie in MCU Phase 7, as he is not the type of character who could lead a movie. But unless Diesel is just trying to will a Planet X movie into existence, the indication of Marvel's interest could be true. Perhaps the idea for a Groot Planet X MCU movie could be the foundation for another Special Presentation on Disney+ now that Werewolf by Night has debuted. This would be a less risky bet by Marvel unless the Planet X movie is actually just Guardians of the Galaxy 4. Only time will tell if Groot gets a solo movie after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
