A new Marvel video game is being made by ex-Uncharted director and writer Amy Hennig's new studio, Skydance New Media. The studio is an offshoot of the popular Hollywood film studio and was formed earlier in 2021. After Hennig left PlayStation and Naughty Dog during the development of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, she joined EA to work on a Star Wars action-adventure game that was ultimately canceled. The acclaimed game developer is now working on a different Disney IP by taking up the new Marvel game.

Over the last several years, the bar of quality for Marvel video games has been raised. Insomniac Games has led the charge with its Marvel's Spider-Man titles, and Eidos-Montreal Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has proven non-PlayStation studios are capable of delivering compelling games inspired by the popular brand. Insomniac recently announced Marvel's Spider-Man 2 with Kraven and Venom, as well as Marvel's Wolverine, which has revealed very few details so far.

Following the release of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel and Skydance New Media confirmed they're collaborating on a new AAA Marvel game. There's currently no word on which superhero(s) the game will star, but Marvel spoke highly of Henning and her studio, noting their ambition and vision was exciting from the get-go. Hennig also noted her love for Marvel and remarked upon the opportunity as the studio's first project in a statement:

"The Marvel Universe epitomizes all the action, mystery and thrills of the pulp adventure genre that I adore and lends itself perfectly to an interactive experience. It’s an honor to be able to tell an original story with all the humanity, complexity, and humor that makes Marvel characters so enduring and to enable our players to embody these heroes that they love.”

The Uncharted writer-director confirmed a new game was on the way at Skydance earlier this year, but no specific details were shared at the time. Because Skydance New Media was only recently formed, its Marvel game is most likely in early development, and meaningful details may not surface for at least a couple of years. Hennig has had an unfortunate streak of canceled games over the past decade, but now that she's president of Skydance, it seems far less likely this Marvel game will be scrapped unless she or Marvel make the call.

It seems like Marvel Games has found its footing in the industry, as it has multiple AAA games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and Midnight Suns on the way. Like the MCU, Marvel is attracting marquee talent in gaming like ex-Uncharted director Amy Henning and Insomniac Games. Perhaps Marvel has cracked the formula for its games by hiring some of the biggest names available, but only time will tell if each Marvel game pays off.
