A new announcement for Marvel: Future Fight indicates that Marvel may finally be giving X-Men fans what they want. This comes in the wake of recent Marvel video games being criticized for their lack of X-Men - characters who have been immensely popular for decades, having starred in several comic book titles, movies, and video games, in addition to having received countless toylines and merchandise.
Netmarble, the makers of Marvel: Future Flight, has announced that the X-Men will finally be joining the roster of playable characters. The roster already includes dozens of characters, including various members of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, and characters from Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel Universe. Despite the high number of Marvel superheroes available to players, no X-Men have been available before now.
The first X-Men characters to be added to the game are Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Magneto, Rogue, Storm, and Beast. The new update also features an Epic Quest involving Wolverine. Netmarble has released video teasers to prepare fans for the new characters. The update will include additional new content outside of the X-Men, such as new costumes and changes to certain modes (such as Daily Missions).
The idea of Marvel allowing X-Men characters in Marvel: Future Fight reinforces the notion that Marvel is beginning to soften their policies on X-Men and possibly Fantastic Four characters. Since Marvel doesn't own the film rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four (who are both at 20th Century Fox), their characters have been left out in the cold in terms of appearances in Marvel games.
However, Marvel has recently cooperated with Fox in helping to produce TV shows to exist that the X-Men universe, such as Legion and the upcoming series, The Gifted. Also, James Gunn confirmed that Marvel and Fox worked out a character trade for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to include Ego the Living Planet.
Is the upcoming X-Men update for Marvel: Future Fight a sign of things to come? The news comes at a time where fans are wondering if X-Men characters will have a place in the upcoming console game, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. The Marvel vs. Capcom series has always heavily relied on the inclusion of X-Men characters. The first game in the franchise was actually titled X-Men vs. Street Fighter. So far, the Marvel side of the roster for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite features eight announced characters, none of which being characters associated with the X-Men.
Fans are hoping that the inclusion of X-Men in Marvel: Future Fight gives the X-Men a future in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and other games that follow.
The update for Marvel: Future Fight has already gone live. The game is available worldwide on Android and iOS. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will release on September 19 for the PC, the Xbox One, and the Playstation 4.
