Warning: SPOILERS for A.X.E: Judgment Day #5The X-Men are about to lose one of the cornerstones of their new era, thanks to their war with the Eternals and the resulting world-ending Marvel crossover event. A.X.E: Judgment Day changes the landscape of the X-Men, Eternals and Avengers forever after a war between two groups awakens a Godlike being who intends to judge humanity (and mutantkind and Eternals) for their many sins. A.X.E: Judgment Day #5 suggests that as a result of this judgment, mutants will lose their greatest weapon: resurrection.
What began as a war between the X-Men and the Eternals is now a fight for survival as Iron Man's efforts to bring peace through superior firepower have backfired horribly; Tony Stark has awakened a Celestial, who now judges the inhabitants of the Earth. The Progenitor Celestial either "passes" or "fails" every human, mutant and Eternal by administering vague, individualized tests - and when even Captain America fails his test, no one is safe. The Celestial fails Daredevil, Emma Frost, Professor Xavier and Cersei while passing Hope Summers, Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales and Hawkeye - but they are not enough, and the Celestial ultimately decides to destroy the world.
In A.X.E: Judgment Day #5, written by Keiron Gillen with art by Valerio Schiti, the Celestial kills millions of people after flooding cities, erupting volcanoes, and destroying entire nations (including Krakoa). This is a clear doomsday scenario and even the mightiest heroes like Thor and Captain Marvel are killed in seconds. With few options remaining, the surviving heroes hatch a plan to use the mutant resurrection technology to resurrect Captain America: the first non-mutant ever to return from the dead via Krakoan science. Unfortunately, with this one action, the X-Men have doomed themselves to lose resurrection forever.
In the past, resurrection was strictly limited to mutants, but Captain America's resurrection means anyone on Earth can return from the dead (mutant or otherwise), and death in comics is even more impermanent than it was before. While it is inevitable that the heroes of Earth will stop the Celestial from destroying their home, the X-Men-Eternals war must have consequences - and that consequence will undoubtedly be the loss of resurrection technology. The Celestial will make mutants mortal once again as punishment for keeping the technology to themselves in the first place.
The Eternals are not exempt from this judgment either. The Celestial may decide to remove their immortality as well, and destroy the Machine that brings them back from the dead. The event will most likely end with humans, mutants and Eternals equal in the eyes of Death once again. For the members of the X-Men, this will be a distressing return to the status quo - but the Eternals have never experienced permanent death before, and they may have to rethink their name in the wake of the Godlike Celestial's quasi-divine punishment.
