Marvel Studios is currently meeting with writers for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Fantastic Four movie. The success of the MCU over the last decade has come even though Marvel Studios didn't have access to some of its most popular and well-known comic characters. The X-Men and Fantastic Four were controlled by Fox, but that changed recently once Disney acquired the studio. This finally gave Marvel Studios access to mutants and Marvel's First Family, and it is the latter that will get a full MCU reboot first.

One of the surprise announcements made by Kevin Feige near the end of 2020 was officially confirming development is underway on the MCU's Fantastic Four. He revealed that Jon Watts, the director behind the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy, is attached to helm the movie. With Watts currently working on Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 ahead of a December 2021 release, it will still be a few years before Fantastic Four is released. The excitement about Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm joining the MCU can't be contained, though. This has left fans searching for any information possible about the movie.

Following a wild internet rumor that Jennifer Lawrence is playing Sue Storm in Fantastic FourDeadline reporter Justin Kroll shared a small update about the project on Twitter. He revealed that Marvel Studios just started meeting with writers on the project. They have not found the writer (or writers) to tackle Fantastic Four yet, and there is currently no script. Since Watts received a screenplay credit for Spider-Man: Homecoming, he may be one of the people who eventually takes a pass on the script.

The search for Fantastic Four's writer will likely take several months. Marvel Studios recently hired Stacy Osei-Kuffour to write Mahershala Ali's Blade, and it was reported that this process took six months. It should be expected that Marvel takes their time finding the right writer for Fantastic Four, so it might not be until later this year that a writer is announced. There is no official rush to decide either since the movie does not yet have a release date. Although, Fantastic Four is widely believed to be on target for a 2023 release given Watt's involvement.

As the search for a writer on Fantastic Four begins, Marvel should have plenty of people to choose from. Fantastic Four's expected sci-fi/comedy approach and the high-profile nature of this MCU reboot will draw many pitches. They could bring some new voices into the MCU to help give the Fantastic Four their own tone and style, but some veterans of the shared universe could also be called upon again. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have become some of Marvel's more trusted writers with their work on the Spider-Man trilogy and Ant-Man and The Wasp. This could even be a new project for Captain Marvel and Black Widow scribe Jac Schaeffer to tackle after her excellent work on WandaVision. No matter who is selected, it is great to know that Marvel Studios is starting to make more progress on Fantastic Four already.
