Marvel's next superhero team-up film Eternals is officially set after the events of Avengers: Endgame according to the film's synopsis. Over the past 1 years, Marvel has put out 23 films as part of a three-phase narrative, officially titled The Infinity Saga by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige. The events of Avengers: Endgame effectively ended the Infinity Saga and set up the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a new era of heroes and villains in the upcoming Phase 4.

Marvel first showed off footage of Eternals at CCXP last month, after confirming the full main cast at D23 last summer. The Eternals star-studded cast includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and more as the Marvel superheroes. Since then, hype for the movie has only continued to grow, especially after Eternals set photos showed some of the characters' costumes. Still, even with widespread fan interest, Eternals is a lesser known property that's entirely new to the live-action universe, and it remains to be seen whether Marvel will have a box office hit on their hands.

Today, Marvel Studios parent company Disney unveiled the full official synopsis for Eternals, which further confirms the main villain to be the Deviants. It was previously confirmed the Deviants would debut in Eternals. Read the full Eternals movie synopsis below.

Marvel Studios’ “The Eternals” features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame”, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Then. Kit Harington was cast as Dane Whitman. Directed by Chloé Zhao, who helmed the critically acclaimed Sundance film”The Rider,” and produced by Kevin Feige, “The Eternals” opens in U.S. theaters on November 6, 2020.

Eternals cast

Feige already said that the events of Eternals would take place over 7,000 years. If that's the case, it's likely that the backstory of the movie will take place long before the events of Endgame, while the "active timeline" will take place after. Disney also describes the considerable talent working on the project including director Chloé Zhao, the third woman to helm an MCU project following Cate Shortland on Black Widow and Anna Boden, along with her partner Ryan Fleck, on Captain Marvel.

Eternals is in a little bit of a tricky spot as the film hasn't been set up to coalesce with the MCU like other projects before it. For example, although Guardians of the Galaxy was very much an independent film series, it was set up in a way that connected the overarching villain Thanos to the world of the Avengers movies. That being said, there have been Easter eggs in the past that have alluded to Eternals, such as their signature ship showing up in Thor: Ragnarok. But for the most part, references to the ancient alien superheroes have been few and far between. Fans won't have to wait long though to see how Eternals sets up the next phase of the MCU, as the film is set to launch in November.
