Salma Hayek may be the latest star to join the cast of Marvel Studios' The Eternals. The studio has had success turning obscure comic book properties into big hits (i.e. Guardians of the Galaxy), and Marvel is currently hoping that The Eternals can do the same. The movie is based around a group of superpowered humans who were given their powers by ancient Celestials. The movie adaptation of the Jack Kirby creations is set to be directed by Chloe Zhao and they have recently started casting her ensemble.
The process started with a surprise as Angelina Jolie reportedly was courted for the lead female role, presumably as Sersi. Since the addition of Jolie, Marvel has found Game of Thrones' Richard Madden to be the male lead Ikaris, while Kumail Nanjiani and Ma Dong-seok have each reportedly joined the cast in unspecified roles. Most recently, rumors circulated that Keanu Reeves could be in contention for a role too.
According to a new report from The Wrap, Salma Hayek is now in talks to join the ensemble too. There are no details on who she will play if the deal goes through. The Latinx, Oscar-nominated actress has yet to do a blockbuster of this size, but she would be the latest addition to a cast that Marvel Studios reportedly wants to be incredibly diverse.
Hayek has shown great range over the years, earning praise for her dramatic turn as Frida Khalo in Frida. She recently had a role in The Hitman's Bodyguard opposite of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson and will return for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard next year. If The Eternals secures a late 2020 release date as expected, then it will make for a potentially big year for Hayek.
With her talent as an actress undeniable, the question that most fans will have is what role she will play. The character breakdowns that previously surfaced revealed five female roles for The Eternals: Sersi, Elysius, Thena, Karen, and Sprite. With Jolie already believed to be playing Sersi, that leaves four roles left, but only two of them are likely fits for Hayek. Marvel was reportedly looking for an early-30s actress for Karen and Sprite is a pre-teen/teenager character.
Between Elysius and Thena, Hayek could fill either one of them without question. Elysius is an artificially created being connected to Titan's supercomputer, while Thena is a smart and powerful warrior. In certain comic storylines, Thena has a kid and a motherly quality to her. It is easy to imagine Hayek excelling in that type of a role, while also still being able to get in on the action when needed. With Marvel Studios heading to San Diego Comic-Con in just a few weeks, it may not be too long before they confirm Hayek's casting in The Eternals and reveal who she is playing.
