Gemma Chan confirms that Marvel’s Eternals movie has officially wrapped filming. Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals is set to help carry the MCU into Phase 4 after last year’s Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home wrapped up the loosely woven saga that began with 2008’s Iron Man and went on to include 23 films that collectively grossed over $22 billion at the worldwide box office.

Like Iron Man and all the other Marvel cinematic characters, the Eternals have their roots in comic book lore, first being introduced by the legendary Jack Kirby back in 1976. The arrival of the Eternals, defenders of earth created by alien Celestials, indeed continues the MCU’s trend toward more science-fiction oriented stories after 2019’s Captain Marvel began steering things in that direction. According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, the Eternals movie will take place over the course of thousands of years, but a plot set after the events of Endgame is still expected to make up the core of the story (which only makes sense as Marvel attempts to bridge the gap between Phase 3 and Phase 4).

Earlier this week, it was reported – and seemingly confirmed on Instagram by star Richard Madden – that Eternals had wrapped principal photography. Now, Sersi actress Chan has also taken to social media to confirm that the movie has indeed wrapped, at least for the actors. See her post in the space below:

Of course, the wrap of principal photography is only one milestone on the way to the film’s completion, as there will now be a long post-production process and plenty of reshoots (it being standard practice for big-budget studio films to undergo massive reshoots). Important details about the film’s story are naturally being kept under wraps by the highly spoiler-averse Marvel and Disney juggernaut, but a few things have leaked out about the movie, most notably star Kumail Nanjiani’s ripped body. The cast for Eternals includes some other big names, with Angelina Jolie making her MCU debut alongside Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry and Barry Keoghan.

It remains to be seen how exactly Eternals will carry on the legacy of the MCU after the massive shakeup represented by Endgame, but there’s certainly reason for fans to be optimistic after Feige and company did such an amazing job steering the saga through the first decade of its existence. That being said, there’s no guarantee audiences will take to the new MCU characters as well as they took to Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and company beginning in 2008. Of course, there will be holdover characters from Phase 3 to Phase 4, including Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange and Black Panther, and that no doubt takes some of the pressure off films like Eternals. Indeed, Marvel is in the enviable position of being able to continue on with some tried-and-true characters while also taking a shot at establishing new stories like Eternals in hopes of finding some interesting flavors that might spice up the old recipe.
