Warning! Spoilers ahead for Empyre #3

The Kree/Skrull War has been a constant conflict within the Marvel Universe since the very beginning, with Earth getting right in the middle of it on more than one occasion. Even now during Marvel's Empyre event, with the Kree and Skrull joining forces and coming to a historic alliance against the Cotati and their malicious plant-life, Earth is caught up in the battle.

The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and more are defending the planet from the Coatati, trying to prevent them from eliminating all animal life alongside the Kree and Skrull. However, the question remains: Will the Kree/Skrull alliance last after Empyre, or will the war resume?

The Kree/Skrull War was one of the first major cosmic adventures the Avengers were involved with, and has long persisted as an ongoing conflict in the cosmos. Earth, for its part, is seen as a key strategic planet for both the Kree and Skrull empires, making it very valuable and a point of contention. However, after the Avengers repelled both forces the first time, the number of incursions on Earth dramatically decreased as it was revealed that the Illuminati traveled to the heart of the Skrull Empire, warning that future conflict on their planet would not be allowed. (though the Skrull would enact their Secret Invasion years later regardless)

Now, the Skrull and Kree are united, with their respective leaderships putting King Dorek the VIII (formerly known as Hulking) in a seat of power over them both, though his main purpose may be to just serve as a figurehead. While they intended to eliminate the Cotati on Earth's moon, whom both empires despise, they were unable to do so, thanks to the Avengers perceiving the Cotati to be victims. Unfortunately, they held of the Kree/Skrull fleet long enough for the Cotati to prepare, unleashing their Death Blossom, overtaking all present with an attack of vicious plant-life. With that, the Cotati's invasion of Earth truly began, and the Avengers and Fantastic Four found themselves allied (more or less) with the Kree and Skrull. But will the peace last? Probably not.

Empyre #3 revels why the alliance seems doomed to fail. At the end of the issue from writer Dan Slott and Al Ewing, Captain Gla-Ree starts looking closely at Tanalth the Pursuer, a key leader of the Kree. He tells her that he knows her secret: She's actually a Skrull. However, he's curious as to why a Skrull spy would stay so long within the Kree's ranks, helping to make them strong. Shifting to her true form, Tanalth reveals that she's always known that two empires would become intertwined, ruled by her bloodline. She reveals herself to be R'Klll, Empress of Skrulls, and the grandmother of Dorek VIII. Through her grandson, her bloodline will soon rule over the entire galaxy. Gla-Ree approves, and together they make plans to manipulate Dorek and achieve their own goals, which spells disaster for the alliance.

It seems likely that their deception will at some point be discovered. If that happens, distrust between the Kree and Skrull will hit an all-time high, and their union will no doubt be over. It could be that the Kree/Skrull War was never meant to end. Perhaps there's just too much bad blood. As Empyre continues, fans should on the lookout for more signs of cracks that could lead to the alliance breaking apart entirely.
