According to showrunner Marion Dayre, Marvel's Echo has been significantly delayed. Echo continues the story of Maya Lopez, portrayed by Alaqua Cox, after the character's debut in Marvel Studios' Hawkeye TV series. Even though Echo's not a fan-favorite comic book character, connected Marvel household names such as Daredevil and Kingpin have MCU fans looking out for the show's premiere.

During an interview on The Writers Panel podcast, Echo showrunner Marion Dayre revealed that the show was significantly delayed. Asked by host Ben Blacker when Echo would premiere, Dayre answered that the show would probably debut a year from now. Going from the previously advertised date of Summer 2023 to a December release is a huge step. There have been rumors circulating for the past month that Marvel was looking to shake up Echo, and the delay might entail filming additional Daredevil scenes or something of the sort to achieve that. Check out the full exchange below:

Ben Blacker: This [the podcast] comes out in a week or two. When does Echo premiere?

Marion Dayre: That will be probably a year from when this comes out.

Ben Blacker: Oh, are you kidding?! I thought it was like within months…Geez, I’m sorry.

Everything We Know About Echo

Even though Echo's premiere has gotten delayed, MCU fans have at least a few interesting details about the show to speculate over until it releases. Since debuting in the MCU, Echo has appeared more in the comics, with a clear push by Marvel CCO Kevin Feige to get fans on board a solo adventure for Maya Lopez. Echo's said to take Maya back to her hometown in Oklahoma, where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community. There are rumors that the Echo show will give Maya powers, so maybe the comics and the MCU are about to intertwine for the character's future.

By bringing Maya home, Echo plans to have the character explore her roots and distance herself from father figure Kingpin after the events of Hawkeye. Maya ended her last meeting with the villain by shooting Kingpin point-blank in the face, and the character played by Vincent D'Onofrio's likely to be looking for revenge against Maya in Echo. With Maya probably going on the run to escape the Kingpin's wrath, the table's set for Charlie Cox's Daredevil to enter the fold and help Echo escape her situation. Echo's cast also includes Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, and the returning Zahn McClarnon as Maya's father.

What This Echo Delay Means For Other MCU Disney+ Shows

Echo and Kazi in Hawkeye

The significant Echo delay will undoubtedly alter Marvel's ever-shifting slate of new MCU releases. Currently, the MCU Disney+ shows other than Echo set to be released in 2023 are Secret Invasion (Spring), Loki Season 2 (Summer), Ironheart (Fall), and Agatha: Coven of Chaos (Winter 2023-2024). Echo's delay would put the show's release in the same range as the witch reunion happening in Agatha. With Ironheart having finished production this November, Marvel might choose to move up that show to Echo's previous slot. Depending on the reasons Marvel had for Echo's huge delay, Feige might decide to let Agatha keep its Winter slot and perfect Echo before the show's ready to premiere.
