Alaqua Cox confirms Echo, Marvel's Hawkeye spinoff show, begins filming tomorrow. Marvel Studios introduced Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez in Hawkeye season 1 as an antagonist for Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). She became the second Deaf character in the MCU after Lauren Ridloff's Makkari in Eternals, and Echo's role in the Disney+ series made her a standout character. Marvel Studios responded to the great reception of Maya Lopez by confirming in late 2021 that Alaqua Cox would return to star in Echo, a spinoff show following the young assassin after Hawkeye.

Most details about Echo remain under wraps, though. The show's costume designer previously confirmed speculation that Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin would return after Hawkeye, as well as Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil after Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was also reported that Wind River actor Graham Greene joined the series, while there is an expectation that Zahn McClarnon will appear as Echo's father in flashbacks. Echo comes from writer Marion Dayre (Better Call Saul).

It now seems that Echo is set to take a major step forward, as star Alaqua Cox has seemingly confirmed that filming begins tomorrow. The actress shared an image on her Instagram story of flowers and a card sent to her before her first day of filming. The card references the history that the unnamed project is making, further indicating that it is Echo since it marks the first Marvel Studios production led by a Deaf or Native American character.

The confirmation that Echo begins filming on April 21, 2022, comes after it was previously reported that the Hawkeye spinoff show would start production this month. Although Marvel has yet to confirm story details for the MCU Disney+ show, it is expected to follow Maya Lopez's journey stepping out of Kingpin's shadow and control. This will seemingly include a reunion with her "uncle" after she was last seen holding a gun to his face. Maya's story is a significant milestone for Marvel Studios as it continues to diversify the leads of its content.

With filming just about to begin on Echo, that means that it might not be long before the internet is buzzing about set photos from the series. These could provide some exciting teases about what Echo's solo adventure contains. Production is taking place around Atlanta, Georgia, just like many other MCU Phase 4 projects, but it is unclear how much on-set filming will be done, as Marvel can also use sound stages and sets to prevent leaks. In any case, Echo starting filming tomorrow is a big moment for the series and a great sign that the series should begin streaming on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
