Hawkeye’s Kate Bishop is the most important character in Marvel’s Disney+ shows that hasn’t been cast yet. In Marvel Comics, Bishop was a member of the Young Avengers and the second hero to use the mantle of “Hawkeye.” Years after her debut, she became the teenage protégé of the original Hawkeye, Clint Barton, and a partner who fought alongside him across several stories.

Among the MCU shows coming to Disney’s streaming service in Phase 4 is Hawkeye. After years of being a supporting hero in The Avengers movies and Captain America: Civil War, Jeremy Renner’s Earth’s Mightiest Marksman will finally serve as the central character. However, he’ll be sharing the spotlight with another Marvel Comics superhero. It’s been confirmed that the MCU will introduce its take on Kate Bishop in the upcoming TV series, with the presumption being that Clint Barton will train her to be a new version of Hawkeye, possibly so that she can be his replacement in future Marvel movies and shows. As a legacy hero and a founding member of the Young Avengers in Marvel Comics, there’s an expectation that Kate Bishop will be a key MCU character going forward (even if Renner ultimately keeps the Hawkeye mantle).

Marvel will be introducing at least three other major heroes onto the small screen in its Disney+ lineup. In September, Tatiana Maslany was reportedly cast as She-Hulk (though the actress has denied this) and Iman Vellani landed the role of Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel. In late October, it was said that Star Wars sequel trilogy star Oscar Isaac has been chosen to play the Crescent Crusader, Moon Knight. With all three of these casting reports happening at about the same time, there’s an expectation that a Kate Bishop actress should be revealed soon.

Ms. Marvel is expected to begin filming later this year, followed by She-Hulk and Moon Knight in 2021. Though production has reportedly been delayed for Hawkeye, it too should start shooting some time in 2021, with a Disney+ release happening either late in the year or in early 2022. Based on this timetable and with 2020 coming to an end, fans may find out who’s playing Kate Bishop at any time now.

The name that’s being talked about the most is Hailee Steinfeld. There’s been multiple rumors that the actress has been cast as the character, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Back in 2019, it was said by Hawkeye showrunner Trinh Tran that there is a “fascinating young female who is very interested in this role” but there have been no major developments on that front since then, other Steinfeld pushing back on the casting rumors. It seems quite possible that by the end of 2020 or very early in 2021, Marvel will have finally found its Kate Bishop to join Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton in Hawkeye.
