Post-credit scenes have become a staple in comic book movies, with fans still talking about the one from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It's not only a clever way to make audiences see the cast and crew behind the film but also has become a definitive way to build hype for sequels and spin-offs. However, there have been times when a post-credit scene promised something only for it to be abandoned.

Sometimes it was due to the sequel (or even the franchise) being canceled afterward, other times it was simply overlooked by the filmmakers. When it comes to Marvel and DC films, there have been a few post-credit scenes that perfectly set up a storyline for the future but sadly were never acknowledged again.

Batman VS The Suicide Squad Could Have Been A Perfect Sequel

Suicide Squad (2016)

Bruce Wayne warning Amanda Waller to shut down Task Force X in Suicide Squad 2016

After the debacle with the 2017 version of Justice League, Ben Affleck quit the role of Batman for a long period. So it's not exactly surprising that the post-credit scene from Suicide Squad was never followed up. It's mostly disappointing because it establishes a classic rivalry from the comics.

Bruce Wayne and Amanda Waller establish a truce in order for Bruce to get information on The Flash and Aquaman. However, this post-credit scene has Bruce warn Amanda Waller to shut down Task Force X, which she didn't do thus beginning the long-running feud between them. Bruce got the information he needed but Waller never held up her end of the bargain.

How Did Professor X Get His Body Back?

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Professor X waking up in another man's body in X-Men The Last Stand

Before Iron Man, it was actually X-Men: The Last Stand that featured Marvel's first post-credit scene. It saw a comatose man seen previously in the film waking up with the consciousness and voice of Charles Xavier AKA Professor X. Post-credit scenes weren't common so not as many people knew about this revelation until later.

It does somewhat explain the miraculous return of Xavier in the post-credit scene for The Wolverine but there is one thing that is never addressed. How did Xavier get his body back? The man he was possessing looked nothing like Patrick Stewart. Never once is this explained or hinted at in X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Why Did Tony Meet With Ross?

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Tony Stark speaking with General Thaddeus Ross in The Incredible Hulk

After beating Abomination in The Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner and the Hulk go on to live as wanted criminals, finally escaping the clutches of General Thaddeus Ross. That's when Ross is visited in a bar by the one and only Tony Stark who is there to tell the general about the Avenger Initiative.

This clearly sets up the idea that Iron Man and Ross were going to be the ones to bring Bruce Banner into the superhero team. Instead, this post-credit scene is never mentioned or followed up. Instead, the task of finding Banner was left to Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow. It even was revealed in a Marvel One-Shot that Abomination was considered for the Avengers before Hulk.

Mr. Sinister Was A Better Choice Than Retelling The Phoenix Saga

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

A briefcase with the Essex corporation logo in X-Men Apocalypse

It's somewhat infamous that X-Men: Dark Phoenix had a troubled production from start to finish which is why it resulted in one of the weakest of the Fox franchise. The final product completely ignores what was set up in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The post-credit scene for X-Men: Apocalypse teased the introduction of the Essex Corporation which would have brought about the live-action debut of Mr. Sinister. Sinister is one of the most iconic X-Men villains but sadly, he was completely disregarded for another poor adaptation of the Phoenix Saga.

Where Is The Ravagers Spin-Off?

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

The leaders of the Ravagers reunited as a team in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

When it comes to Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, there are several post-credit scenes but most of them are simply for some chuckles. However, there is one where it seemed like James Gunn was setting up a spin-off featuring Starhawk, who was the original Guardians Of The Galaxy leader in the comics.

Multiple Ravager leaders reunite after the tragic death of Yondu and it is a group consisting of unique, colorful, and delightfully over-the-top characters. With a cast consisting of Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, Miley Cyrus, and Michael Rosenbaum, it could have been a solid space-faring adventure. Unfortunately, this has never been brought up again.

What Happened To Scorpion?

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Scorpion speaking with Vulture in Spider-Man Homecoming

The group of villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home was meant to provide longtime fans with some nostalgia while also providing closure for villains that never got them. The five villains were all of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield while none of Tom Holland's villains showed up.

2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming established Mac Gargan AKA Scorpion wanting revenge on Spider-Man and once Peter's identity was exposed, he would want to go after him. Instead, Scorpion was simply forgotten but that could change with the next trilogy of Spider-Man films.

Sinestro Was Set Up Perfectly

Green Lantern (2011)

Sinestro becoming a Yellow Lantern in Green Lantern 2011

Over the years, the Green Lantern movie has gained a bit of a following with certain fans claiming that the disdain it received was a bit overblown. One of the aspects that fans often praise to defend the film is the portrayal of Sinestro by Mark Strong and how they build him up to become a villain for the sequel.

In fact, fans were genuinely excited when Sinestro changed from his green ring of will to the yellow ring of fear, transforming him into the first Yellow Lantern. If Warner Bros. wasn't so quick to pull the plug, a sequel focusing on the rivalry between Hal Jordan and Sinestro could have made for a superior film.

Big Hero 6 Begged For A Sequel

Big Hero 6 (2014)

Fred reuniting with his father played by Stan Lee in Big Hero 6

It may not be part of the traditional Marvel universe but Big Hero 6 is a Marvel movie. It too had a post-credit scene that featured Fred discovering that his father, played by the legendary Stan Lee himself, was a retired superhero. It was mostly played for laughs but it did set up a sequel in which Fred takes up the mantle.

Of all of the Disney movies, Big Hero 6 was the one that was the most deserving and open for a sequel. However, other than a short-lived spin-off series and a new Baymax! spin-off, Big Hero 6 was never given a proper sequel with the team.

The Silver Surfer Spin-Off That Never Happened

Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer (2007)

Silver Surfer in Rise of The Silver Surfer

To a certain degree, this makes sense since Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer was not loved by critics or audiences. However, one thing that was never an issue for fans was the portrayal of the Silver Surfer himself played by Doug Jones and Laurence Fishburne.

The post-credit scene for Rise Of The Silver Surfer showed that the titular hero survived his battle with Galactus and has him calling his board. A Silver Surfer spin-off could have been better than the film he originated in, especially if the two performers returned to the role. However, Fox abandoned the Tim Story universe after Rise Of The Silver Surfer was not well-received.

Mordo Was A Villain Off-Screen

Doctor Strange (2016)

Mordo confronts Pangborn in Doctor Strange

In a nearly identical fashion to Sinestro, Mordo was first established as an ally in the Doctor Strange movie. However, the post-credit scene shows him turning evil by forcibly removing the magic from Jonathan Pangborn's body, setting up that he would be the villain in a future film.

This was not the case because it was established in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness that Strange's fights with Mordo happened between films. This doesn't mean that Mordo will never come back but fans would have liked to have seen those events actually play out on screen.
