The Amazing Spider-Man rebooted its comic book line four months ago and started off with an unexplained time jump. This story saw Spider-Man at odds with his allies in the superhero community. It also, shockingly, saw Peter Parker separated from Mary Jane Watson again, with no explanation. For many Marvel couples, this is par for the course.

From the start of Marvel Comics, there have been couples and relationships on top of superheroes battling their arch enemies. These include people who have gotten married, men and women who have simply been dating partners, and those countless couples who could never figure out what they wanted to do with their futures together.

Reed Richards & Susan Storm

The Fantastic Four

The first big wedding in Marvel Comics came with Reed Richards and Susan Storm, Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman of The Fantastic Four. Now, in 2022, Reed and Sue have been married longer than almost anyone in comics, and they even have two kids, one incredibly smart and the other one overpowered.

However, with all this, the two couldn't keep together and they broke up several times over the years. This happened mostly thanks to Reed's lack of relationship skills which caused Sue to leave in frustration. Add in differences in opinion, as the Civil War broke them up as well, and this couple just can't stay on the same page.

Peter Parker & Mary Jane Watson

Peter Parker marries Mary Jane Watson.

When Spider-Man first showed up, Peter Parker was a bookworm and a high school nerd. However, over time he found love often, and it almost never worked out. However, after Gwen Stacy died, Peter finally started dating Mary Jane Watson, and their wedding was one of the biggest in Marvel Comics.

Their marriage was special, and they seemed like the perfect match, which turned out to mostly be true. However, they broke up more than once, with One More Day the most controversial split. With them breaking up again this year, it seems Marvel always wants to test the theory of their love stories' fate.

Jean Grey & Scott Summers

Jean Grey and Scott Summers were two of the original X-Men, and while all the boys on the team liked her, she seemed fated to always end up with Scott. However, there was always something getting in the way. Wolverine liked her too, and that always caused conflict and Scott even married her clone after he thought she died.

The two got back together, and they had a big wedding. However, Jean died again, and it was honestly her deaths that broke them up more often than not, with Scott moving on to Emma Frost at one point. Scott and Jean might not stay together, but they always try.

Gambit & Rogue

One of the most dysfunctional couples in Marvel Comics history is Rogue and Gambit. In the start, Rogue was a troubled woman who struggled with her past villainous actions and the fact she can't touch anyone. Gambit was a former thief with a dark past, but a roguish personality.

When Gambit and Rogue met, it was love at first sight, and they ended up dating and breaking up more than almost anyone in Marvel Comics. They even got married when Kitty Pryde left Colossus at the altar. However, that didn't even last, and they are currently not together anymore.

Hank Pym & Janet Van Dyne

One of the most controversial relationships in Marvel Comics was the one between Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne. The two debuted in comics together as Ant-Man and The Wasp, and they were founding members of the Avengers. However, Hank had some problems that kept him and Janet from living happily ever after.

He switched identities to Yellow Jacket and Janet agreed to marry him even though he refused to tell the other Avengers who he was. They broke up, got back together, and then the slap heard around the world led to their divorce. As it is, they got back together later and then broke up again. At the moment, they are not together at all.

Black Bolt & Medusa

Black Bolt and Medusa

Black Bolt and Medusa should have remained the strongest couple in Marvel Comics. However, the one thing that hurts couples the most, especially superhero couples, is secrets. The secrets Black Bolt kept from Medusa caused their biggest breakup to date.

The powerful Black Bolt was a member of The Illuminati, and he hid this from his Queen. Not only did she dump him, but she took over the rule of Attilan, with Black Bolt leaving his home completely. They got back together, but have never been as close as they used to be.

Kitty Pryde & Colossus

Originally, the relationship between Kitty Pryde and Colossus was very controversial. Kitty was the youngest ever member of the X-Men, barely a teenager, while Colossus was older, but was still around 18 and way too old for a romantic relationship with the girl.

Despite this, they ended up dating when she got old enough, although she was always flirting until she was legal. After this, they broke up a lot. In the first Secret Wars, Colossus fell in love with another woman and dumped Kitty. Years later, they were back together and Kitty left Colossus at the altar on their wedding day. At the moment, Colossus is dating someone else and Kitty is one of Marvel's most famous LGBTQ+ characters.

Daredevil & Elektra

The iconic Daredevil and Elektra realistically never had a chance to work. Matt Murdock was a born-again Catholic with a lot of guilt and fought hard to always do the right thing. Elektra was a trained assassin and she had no problem killing for anyone. Then they fell in love.

Their relationship had so many ups and downs that it rivals a roller coaster. Bullseye killed Elektra and after she resurrected, she was a villain again and fought Daredevil more than she worked with him. However, most recently, they are back together again, at least as partners as she worked as Daredevil while he served time in prison and they are now fighting to take down the underworld.

Black Panther & Storm

Black Panther and Storm.

Black Panther and Storm were the greatest couple in Marvel Comics for a long time. T'Challa was the King of Wakanda and Storm was always a goddess, making them pure royalty when they got married. They knew each other since childhood and this was a marriage built to last.

Sadly, Black Panther annulled their marriage when Storm fought with the X-Men in Avengers Vs. X-Men. It seemed things were finished, but she returned to him during Ta-Nehisi Coates's recent run on Black Panther, but they were back at odds when Storm sided with Krakoa against Wakanda.

Captain America & Peggy Carter

A blended image of Captain America and Peggy Carter from Marvel Comics.

Looking at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, people might think that Captain America and Peggy Carter were always meant to be. She was his "best girl" and he gave up his life as a hero to grow old with her. However, in the comics, things were a bit tougher.

Captain America dated Sharon Carter for a long time in the comics, while it was only hinted at in the movies. He also dated other women, and when Peggy returned, she was much older. However, they are now back together again, although her secrets have always made them an on-again-off-again couple in the comics.
