This article contains spoilers for Force Works 2020 #3

Marvel's War Machine now has his own army of Deathloks. Matthew Rosenberg's Force Works 2020 has seen Maria Hill send a field team to the island of Lingares, which seems to be a volcanic island offshore South America. Unfortunately their mission is going badly wrong, due to an unwise alliance with MODOK.

Lingares has been ravaged by a gigantic android called Ultimo, which was created with the power to destroy entire worlds. MODOK sought to control Ultimo, to bind the android to his will, and so he created an army of Deathloks as his pawns. A Deathlok is a cybernetic being; some of them are essentially cyborg zombies, with advanced technology used to reanimate their corpses. All trace of humanity has been removed from the Deathloks, meaning they are slaves to their programming. MODOK intended them to serve as his agents, but they went out of control.

Matters come to a head in this week's Force Works #3, when MODOK takes advantage of his team-up with the Avengers to successfully establish control of Ultimo. The Force Works team put together a hasty strategy, with Quake giving them cover by donning the War Machine armor and running interference with Ultimo. Meanwhile, the rest of the team examine the Deathlok program. James Rhodes may not have his armor, but he's a smart guy who has worked with Tony Stark for years. He's able to identify a central processor in the command unit, and US Agent extracts it by tearing that particular Deathlok's head off. Rhodey implants parts of the Deathlok tech in his own skull, allowing himself to take mental control of the entire army.

Deathlok War Machine Army

War Machine's Deathlok army joins the battle just in time. Quake has been swatted out of the sky, stripped of James Rhodes' armor, but she had the hottest trick shot of all time. Quake has torn a hole in the ground, exposing the lava lake beneath the surface of Lingares, and MODOK is battling to stop his Ultimo body falling into it. James Rhodes is a skilled military tactician, but frankly this situation doesn't call for much innovation. He commands the Deathloks to swarm, distracting MODOK, pushing Ultimo into the lava lake.

Rhodey believed the Deathlok process could be reserved, but it was a gamble. Fortunately, he's proved right, and Maria Hill's agents are able to extract the Deathlok tech and restore him to baseline human normal. The Deathlok army is destroyed, and Force Works make sure the secrets of MODOK's tech are lost as well, fearful even Maria Hill can't be trusted with such secrets.
