The first episode of Marvel's Cloak & Dagger TV show premiered at SXSW 2018, and was met with near-universal positive reactions.
June will see the launch of the next Marvel TV series, Cloak & Dagger, starring Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph. Due to premiere on Freeform, the series will be a young-adult superhero romance, and fans are eagerly hoping it will be a worthy addition to the MCU. The show had its world premiere at this year's SXSW; although fans were less than pleased when the episode began to screen over an hour late, the experience appears to have been worth the wait, based on the reactions they posted to social media afterwards.
Fans have now taken to Twitter to express their delight with the first Cloak & Dagger episode. The consensus is that the premiere was a solid start to a promising series, largely carried by the strength of the show's stars. Here's a sample of the reactions thus far:
I’ll have more thoughts on the premiere episode of Marvel’s #CloakAndDagger up on the site soon, but let me just say this: the two young leads are immensely good. They’ll be the reason the watch.— alex mclevy (@alexm247) March 11, 2018
One of the strengths of Marvel's current TV slate is that there's essentially something for everything. The slate ranges from the dark and brooding Marvel Netflix shows - including Jessica Jones season 2, which premiered on Netflix last week - through to young-adult series like Cloak & Dagger and Runaways. The TV shows are adding a welcome degree of genre-diversity to the wider MCU.
Cloak & Dagger promises to be a little more "connected" than the last young-adult series, Runaways. The trailer has already teased that the Roxxon Corporation will play a significant role; what's more, in the comics Cloak is traditionally powered by the Darkforce. The Darkforce made its MCU debut in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 1's "The Only Light in the Darkness", and Marvel revisited it in Agent Carter season 2. It was last referenced in S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4, where Coulson mocked the name. ("And nothing bad ever happens when you work with something called 'Darkforce'", Coulson quipped.)
In this case, first responses suggest something very good is coming out of the Darkforce; Marvel's next young-adult TV series, one that's receiving praise from fans and critics alike. Although the fortunate few at SXSW have had a taste, the rest of us will have to wait till June.
Cloak & Dagger premieres Thursday, June 7 at 8pm on Freeform.
