2017 is not only set to be a big year at the box office for Marvel, but for their TV arm as well. Inhumans will be joining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and ABC, and recently cast Game of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon as Maximus the Mad. Meanwhile, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher will all be joining the Netflix corner of the MCU, with the former debuting in under a month. On top of all that, two other networks will also be getting their own Marvel shows as the company looks to expand its teen roster of heroes. Hulu will be making a show based on Runaways, while Freeform will tackle Cloak & Dagger.
Cloak & Dagger and Runaways have each announced their core cast, and both were said to start filming this month. The two series look to each be following the general beats of the comics they're based on, but it's highly likely Marvel will make a few adjustments to allow the shows to fit into the MCU and work on television. And while there's no officially-announced release date for either series, Cloak & Dagger isn't too far away from being ready to air.
Cloak and Dagger TV series pilot director Gina Prince-Bythewood posted to her Instagram (h/t MCU Exchange) a photo of her with the two leads of the show, announcing that filming on the show's pilot has now wrapped in New Orleans:
If your head is spinning based on the report that the episode had just started filming yesterday, it looks as if the previous post by Prince-Bythewood was merely a tease about the series. As we never heard that the show had officially begun shooting, the immediate assumption was that the image indicated the start of production. It now looks, however, as if filming had actually began some time ago. With the pilot shot, the ball is in the court of Freeform to decide whether they want to pick up the series, at this stage.
Once the show's been given the go, we'll likely get a premiere date (which will not be until the second half of 2017 or early 2018) and a trailer for the series. Many are excited to see how the abilities of Cloak and Dagger are rendered on TV, so any images of the eponymous duo in costume or teases of them in action, are worth keeping an eye out for. Now, all eyes will be on Runaways, which began filming a few weeks back, to see whether Hulu will announce if the show's getting a full order and a trailer. Until then, stay tuned for all things Marvel TV.
Cloak & Dagger will reportedly debut on Freeform in 2018.
