Marvel's Cloak & Dagger gets a June premiere date on Freeform along with an extended sneak peek scene teasing the teen superhero TV series. Ever since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted on ABC in 2013, Marvel Studios has been building and expanding the television side of its Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to their New York City-based Defenders corner of the MCU on Netflix, Marvel launched the younger skewing show, Marvel's Runaways, on Hulu late last year. However, Marvel TV has another teen-focused program set to debut on Freeform this year: Cloak & Dagger.
The show has been in the works since Freeform ordered Cloak & Dagger to series in Spring 2016, and was rumored to begin filming around the same time as Runaways. However, while Runaways has already wrapped up its first season - though it was only 10 episodes - little had been heard about Cloak & Dagger since filming wrapped in late 2017. Now, a new sneak peek for Cloak & Dagger offers an extended look at the show's titular heroes and confirms the series' premiere date.
The Marvel's Cloak & Dagger sneak peek [above] confirms the show will debut with a two-hour premiere on Thursday June 7th at 8pm ET. The show follows teenagers Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) who become the Marvel superheroes known as Dagger and Cloak, respectively. The sneak peek released by Marvel is an extended scene from the two-hour premiere, depicting Tandy and Tyrone's first meeting.
Although their meeting seems to be starting on a flirty foot, which is unsurprising considering their romantic relationship in the comics, it quickly turns sour when Tyrone realizes Tandy has picked his pocket. Tyrone runs after Tandy and chases her through a graveyard until finally catching up with her. However, when the two join hands, something mysterious happens and they're both thrown backward - and when they recover, each are exhibiting some kind of power from their hands. Tandy, for her part, is emitting light, while Tyrone's hand seems to be disappearing into shadow.
It seems their first meeting will trigger the superpowers wielded by Cloak and Dagger in the comics. Introduced to Marvel Comics readers in 1982, Cloak and Dagger are two teenagers who have the ability to wield light daggers and manipulate shadows, respectively. As fan-favorite characters, many welcomed Marvel TV's announcement that a live-action adaptation was in the works, with the show set to air on the younger skewing network Freeform. Marvel Comics writer Joe Pokaski was hired as showrunner for the series, while Gina Prince-Bythewood was tapped to direct the pilot.
Freeform previously released a trailer for Marvel's Cloak and Dagger, and this new sneak peek seems to be an extended scene that was glimpsed in pieces throughout the show's teaser. The sneak peek offers fans a good idea of what to expect from Tandy and Tyrone when viewers meet them in the Cloak and Dagger premiere - and they certainly seem to be typical teenagers, if atypical superheroes. It remains to be seen if Marvel has a critically acclaimed, fan-favorite entry in the MCU on their hands with Cloak and Dagger, but now that the series has a premiere date, fans know when they'll get a chance to see the show for themselves.
