When we met with Marvel Studios boss and producer Kevin Feige in October on the set of Ant-Man, one of the first things we asked about (full interview here!) was whether or not this movie would introduce the other founding member of The Avengers. If fans would finally be meeting Ant-Man, would they also meet Wasp?

His answer was yes, but not in the way you'd think. Flashback sequences will tell the story of original Ant-Man Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and why he resents S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers, and much of that has to do with what happens to the original Wasp (Janet Van Dyne) in the past. The vast majority of the film however, is set in present day and focuses on the mentor-mentee relationship between Pym and his new protege Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) who becomes the next Ant-Man. But what about the next Wasp?

When Evangeline Lilly was cast in Ant-Man, a proven star with action chops for her work in Lost and The Hobbit trilogy, we knew her role would become an important one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before production she teased her Wasp-esque haircut, straight from the comics, and as the daughter of Hank Pym, it made sense that she would eventually become The Wasp. From what Feige said at the Ant-Man press junket this weekend, that's exactly the plan.

"We have plans for her in the future, and we see that not-so-subtly in this film."

It's actually one of the main issues the script for Ant-Man had to deal with, according to what Lilly told us (full interview here!). Since Hope is physically capable and is a brilliant scientist, why wouldn't Hank hand down the Ant-Man suit and tech to her? There are multiple specific reasons as to why that the film will explain, but Lilly did sign a multi-picture deal with the studio.

Ant-Man - Wasp - Yellowjacket and Hank Pym
L to R: Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), the Yellowjacket suit, and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas)

So, we have the original Ant-Man and Wasp, and this new movie breaks the ice on introducing the next generation of the two heroes. We don't know when, but it sounds likely Lilly will be back and may suit up in the future. Rudd's Scott Lang is a member of The Avengers for next year's Captain America: Civil War but we're unsure if Lilly could make an appearance or if she'll return later in Phase 3 or in Avengers: Infinity War.
