Over the last several years, Marvel has rebuilt their brand to once again be one of the leading figures in the entertainment business. Much of their recent success has been built around the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its launch in 2008. While they've primarily stuck to movies and a few television properties, the popularity of the universe cannot and will not be denied. It has continued to give Marvel the chance to spread their reaches even farther, with a recent focus shifting towards revitalizing their video game content.
Marvel began bringing more video games to users by releasing both Marvel: Contest of Champions and Marvel: Future Fight to mobile devices, but they now appear to have started developing more content for actual consoles. Telltale Games recently confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy is one of their upcoming projects for 2017, but that won't be the only console game Marvel will be releasing.
Marvel made the official announcement today that the fourth Marvel vs. Capcom game is coming next year and is officially titled Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. It will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One simultaneously in late 2017 - and in order to get excitement levels even higher, they've released a trailer for the game featuring Iron Man and Captain Marvel going toe-to-toe with Mega Man and Ryu.
Executive Producer of Marvel Entertainment Mike Jones commented on the announcement by stating the following:
For the last two decades, Marvel vs. Capcom has been one of the most celebrated franchises among fans. To deliver on that legacy, we’ve worked closely with Capcom to create a game that honors the heritage of the series and combines Marvel’s unique brand of storytelling with Capcom’s world-class gameplay. We’re raising the bar with ‘Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite’ and are excited for players to get their hands on it next year.
Now that suspicions have been confirmed and a fourth entry into the Marvel vs. Capcom series is coming, the passionate fanbase should expect some changes for Infinite. Unlike installments in the past, Infinite will reportedly focus heavily on MCU characters. This is already evident early on by having Iron Man and Captain Marvel be the two main Marvel characters shown initially.
Unfortunately for fans of Marvel comics and previous games, this likely means that X-Men characters will not make their way into Infinite. It will be a shame to see Wolverine, Magneto, Cyclops, Deadpool, and many more sidelined for this installment, but this should still allow Spider-Man characters to be involved. Meanwhile, it should be interesting to see if characters put on the TV side of the MCU, such as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, or Quake, can make their way into the game as well.
This trailer is sure to get fans of the series excited for what is to come, but there will be even more shown later today. Actual gameplay will be unveiled tonight during the Capcom Cup. The footage should be released online and give everyone a chance to see the gameplay that will be incorporated - and potentially more characters that will be included.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in late 2017.
