A new Marvel documentary, Behind the Mask, is coming to Disney+ in February. Marvel is bringing a slew of content to the streamer in 2021 that will see the MCU expand exponentially into the television sphere. The first high profile show to premiere,  WandaVision, hit the streamer this month to rave reviews. The series, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Scarlet Witch and Vision, respectively, kicked off Phase 4 of the MCU in earnest.

2021 will see Marvel release more projects than ever before. Several shows, including Hawkeye, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Solider, and Ms. Marvel will all hit the streamer this year and expand the story of the long running franchise. Four Marvel films will also hit theaters this year after being delayed in 2020. Black Widow is up first, followed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsEternals, and then the untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel. The content push doesn't just include movies and television shows directly in the larger MCU story.

Hitting the streamer in February is a new documentary titled Behind the Mask.  Announced on Marvel's official website, the documentary will delve into the history of Marvel's most popular heroes. The show will feature guests from Marvel's 80 year history, including writers of popular comics. The documentary will explore the idea of identity and how Marvel's heroes are stand-ins for larger conversations about identity and equal rights. Behind the Mask will premiere on Disney+ on February 12.

Marvel's larger push for a robust slate of content has sparked fears of oversaturation but those fears may be a bit premature. WandaVision has been praised for its ability to shake up the Marvel formula, emulating classic sitcoms of years past for a truly unique take on the MCU. A lot of Marvel's upcoming shows look like they'll repeat that. Loki is being set up as multiverse hopping mystery and She-Hulk will be a thirty minute legal procedural.

Similarly, Behind the Mask is a foray into a different kind of Marvel experience. It will emphasize the foundation of what has become the largest and most successful onscreen franchise in cinematic history. It will also give casual fans a chance to find out where the heroes they've come to love started out. Many MCU fans aren't as familiar with the comics and Behind the Mask will show them the history behind the franchise that has come to define the 21st century cinematic landscape in a lot of ways.
