Marvel Comics held a Battle Royale to determine which popular character is the ultimate Marvel Hero. The contest had fans vote among 16 different heroes until one winner remained as the 2020 Marvel Battle Royale champion. This year's winner? Thor.
Marvel teamed up with StateFarm for the 2020 Battle Royale version with 16 powerful heroes all vying for the top spot among impressive competition. The first round featured some tough match-ups as Venom beat Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel defeated Kitty Pryde, Iron Man beat Captain America in the biggest first-round battle, Jean Grey beat Emma Frost, Spider-Man took down Deadpool, Wolverine beat Cyclops, Hulk defeated Captain Marvel, and Thor beat Storm.
From there, the tournament got even tougher. Venom managed to get more votes than Ms. Marvel, Jean Grey defeated Iron Man, Spider-Man took down Wolverine, and Thor moved past the Hulk. In the third round, it was the Marvel heavyweights who made it to the final. Thor took down Spider-Man, while Jean Grey beat Venom. The final matchup was a doozy: Thor against Jean Grey. The God of Thunder versus an Omega Level mutant. While both heroes deserved consideration for Marvel's ultimate hero, in the end, Thor received more votes than Jean to win the competition. It was close though, as Thor just edged out Jean with 53% of the more than 32,000 votes cast.
It's not like Jean or Thor had an easy path to the finals. Jean had to defeat Emma Frost, Iron Man, and Venom. Meanwhile, Thor had to take out the Omega Level mutant Storm, the Hulk, and Spider-Man. It's a hard-earned victory for Thor, who ultimately received the most votes. But, it's also great to see Jean get some love as she's such an integral part of Marvel's history and the X-Men - plus, she's an absolute powerhouse.
Current Thor writer Donny Cates, who had expressed his support for Thor in the contest, shared his excitement in Thor winning.
So there you have it. Thor is the ultimate champion, at least to those who participated in this fun little tournament. Jean and her fans tried their best to get her the title but just fell short. Fans of both characters should be happy to see Jean and Thor make it to the very end. It's too bad two winners couldn't be named because both deserve it. But for now, Thor is Marvel's ultimate hero.
