New details have emerged on the gameplay of the upcoming Avengers Project from Square Enix. The untitled video game is being described as a third person action-adventure with a focus on online play.
In January, it was announced that video game developer Square Enix, known for the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises, would be partnering with Marvel for a "multi-year, multi-game" deal that would start with The Avengers Project, which would tell a "completely original story" about Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The game is being designed by Tomb Raider developers Crystal Dynamics. The announcement came with a teaser trailer that featured a look at Thor's hammer and Captain America's shield.
IGN learned from NeoGAF user Nirolak of two job postings from Crystal Dynamics for The Avengers Project. The first posting, calling for a "Lead Level Designer," asks for applicants with experience in online play, various modes and campaigns, and an understanding of "the social implications of shared gameplay." The second posting concerns a "Combat Designer," who will help develop combat systems that will apply to a "third person cover based action adventure game."
An online Marvel game is not surprising, considering that most of Marvel's recent video game projects have relied on online play. However, some fans were expecting a game with a focus on single-player gameplay, considering that the game is expected to focus on storytelling.
What may surprise fans is the news that the game will use a third person style of gameplay with a cover system. The cover system is generally utilized in shooter games like the Mass Effect, Uncharted, and Metal Gear Solid franchises to help players avoid gunfire. The mechanism is also common in games that have an emphasis on stealth.
It may seem out of place in a superhero game, but could be an effective style of gameplay for ranged characters like Black Widow and Hawkeye who can't take hits as well as their fellow Avengers. Characters such as Iron Man, the Hulk, and Thor would be challenging to bring to life in a cover-based game since they're designed for more out-in-the-open action. The third person gameplay would also be a break from the top-down format of games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel Heroes Omega.
We will inform you of more details on The Avengers Project as they become available.
