Ulysses Klaue isn’t the only supervillain causing trouble in Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda, as players will face off against the equally evil Crossbones during the latest DLC chapter for Square Enix’s team-based superhero title. Casual Marvel fans will recognize Brock Rumlow from his MCU appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, where he is a HYDRA agent placed undercover within SHIELD. His death in the latter film is a part of the disaster which brings about the Superhero Registration Act that causes tension and conflict amongst the Avengers in Civil War.

In the mainline Marvel comics, Crossbones is a recurring enemy of Captain America and a frequent minion of the monstrous Red Skull. He is a highly trained mercenary and an expert fighter, and even once played a role in the temporary death of Steve Rodgers at the end of the Civil War event back in 2006. Crossbones has also made a few small appearances in video games over the years, ranging from the early 90s arcade brawler Captain America And The Avengers to the mobile fighting title Marvel Contest of Champions.

A recent deep-dive of the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda by Game Informer details some of the new enemies coming to the DLC expansion, including a band of mercenaries dubbed the Klaue Company. These amoral mercs wear battle armor laced with the rare and nigh-invulnerable Vibranium, and leading them into the jungles of Wakanda is a pair of classic villains - including Crossbones. "Crossbones has some of the most iconic comic dialogue ever because he just enjoys himself so much, but he's also got some interesting tricks up his sleeve,” writer Hannah MacLeod notes while discussing the skull-masked mercenary’s role in War For Wakanda. Klaue doesn't really get his hands dirty in the same way as other villains might, so we needed him to have a character who would have no problem with that.

Marvel's Avengers Crossbones

Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda is set to launch on August 17 and promises to bring roughly 25 hours of new story content to the struggling Avengers title. In the build-up to the expansion’s release, developer Crystal Dynamics has put out several animated prequel shorts detailing the world of Wakanda and its appointed protector, the mighty Black Panther. Esteemed Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales scribe Evan Narcisse helped work on War For Wakanda’s plot, which will offer up a take on T’Challa that is different from the one the late Chadwick Boseman brought to life in the MCU.

Crossbones is a fitting choice for a boss in Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda, as he boasts some formidable fighting skills and his job as a mercenary fits with the plot of A.I.M. and Klaue plotting to steal the Vibranium from Wakanda. Players will face off against Crossbones when Marvel’s Avengers: War For Wakanda launches next week.
