Martin Freeman has confirmed that his Black Panther character Everett Ross will return in at least one more Marvel movie.
In the comics, Everett Ross was introduced as a "fish-out-of-water" bureaucrat. He headed to Wakanda, and was stunned at what he saw. The MCU has reinvented Ross as a skilled diplomat and spy; Martin Freeman has happily described him as "the coolest man in the room." Freeman's performance in Black Panther was tremendous, and fans are eager to see Ross's story continue. Excitingly, the actor has just indicated that his time with Marvel isn't over yet.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Freeman reflected on his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. Even at this stage, it seems Marvel had plans beyond Black Panther.
"They introduced me in Civil War and said there would be a couple of other films, one of which was Black Panther."
The comment clearly implies that Ross will return. Of course, the phrase "a couple" is ambiguous; it certainly suggests he'll appear in one more film, but leaves room for another appearance too. Only time will tell whether or not those are smaller roles, such as in Civil War, or the kind of major role seen in Black Panther.
But what films could Ross return in? A Black Panther sequel is in the works, and Kevin Feige is hoping director Ryan Coogler will helm it. Ross is essentially the only man with experience of Wakanda; it would seem a safe bet that he'll wind up assigned as a liaison between the US and the vibanium-rich fictional African nation. The end scene of Black Panther featured one world leader asking just what Wakanda had to offer the rest of the planet, and both T'Challa and Ross were visibly amused by the question.
Another intriguing possibility, though, is that Ross will appear in Captain Marvel. Black Panther revealed that he used to work in the Air Force. Marvel has confirmed that Captain Marvel is set in the '90s, and it's certain to explore Carol Danvers's USAF origins. It's not too difficult to imagine a younger Ross working alongside Carol Danvers; that kind of action would certainly explain why he proved so unflappable in Wakanda. It's even possible Ross wound up briefly connected with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.; at least until the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It's exciting to see that Marvel has more plans for a character who has quickly won fans' hearts. The future is clearly bright for Everett Ross.
